(As opposed to simply "handset is locked to the 3 network")
Does this imply some sort of hardwired lock?
I'm referring specifically to the 6280 and N70.
And has anyone found and appreciable feature difference between those two
models apart from video editing (N70) and Infrared (6280)?

This series of phones (Nokia 6680) included are known a BB5 handsets.
Currently no one has worked out how to unlock these handsets. The
carrier can unlock them but 3 bullshit that they cannot do it.

Thanks.
If I managed to get it unlocked it would work on Optus GSM right?

If its a 3 network phone, its a 3G phone, not a GSM phone so no, it wont
work on Optus GSM

Firstly the phone is also GSM, when you are out of the 3 coverage area
the phone will roam to Telstra's 2.5 GSM network.
*IF* you can get 3 to unlock the phone for you it will then work fine on
the Optus 3G and 2.5 GSM network without a problem. Don't hold your
breath though, expect to take it up with the Telecommunications
Ombudsman if you want to pursue it.

Also the screen on the 6280 is a tiny bit smaller, but has a much larger
resolution.
It's "free" for Orange customer on the $22/month plan according to mail-out,
but in-store and on-line it's quoted as more.

3 has also now added cap options for Orange customers.
