Evening all

I was out of the country for a while, so cancelled my old Optus account
yonks ago. But I've been back almost a year and have been using Virgin's
Povpay service. It is cheap but is proving extremely annoying and
unreliable for me, with messages, both voice and text, turning up hours
after being sent, and in two cases, two days late. And don't get me
started on the wisdom of sending text messages to let you know that
you've got a voicemail - what's wrong with the phone's built in
voicemail notification icon? They've all got it.

I wouldn't be hugely worried about the messages being delayed most of
the time, but I've just started a business so that lack of reliability
has suddenly become an enormous issue, far outweighing the
reasonableness of the call charges.

So what I'm after is a new provider that will give me well priced calls
AND a decentish chunk of GPRS data - 10mb per month would probably do it
because I only want it for e-mail, but 30mb would probably be better
because you always get someone sending you a 10mb picture of a cute
kitten in a jar or something unexpectedly (yes, I know I can just get
headers from pop servers.).

I don't make a huge number of outgoing calls. On Virgin $100 will last
me three or four months.

Availability of roaming, especially in Europe would be good too. I know
I'm going to get gouged roaming, especially with data, so let's not
worry about that right now.

Is there anything provider out there that will do what I want at a very
good price? As the business is brand new (two days and counting!) I
stress the need for it to be cheap. Even povpay, as long as it does
data, would be fine too. And as I've already got the P910 I don't need a
phone thrown in with the account which should drop the price a bit, yes?

Any help gratefully received.

I'd suggest, use up your virgin credit, port to optus, possibly on the
$30 turbocharge prepaid plan....

Price wise that works out to your $90 for 3 months type thing.... only
u get a lot more in usage, and that can do data as you would like.

Reliability wise, see how you go, cause the virgin network runs on the
optus network anyways... so not sure bout the problems u are having,
but the biggest delay I have ever had on a message is about 30 mins.

If u r not really worried about coverage area (depends on where u live
i suppose), go with vodafone, they prob wont be able to match the
price, but when u have voicemail, it will ring you next time u r off
the phone and in a coverage area.  Price wise, u need to compare... I
don't think u'll be able to get the 10-30mb of data in the amount u are
currently spending though.

Thanks unkit - much appreciated. I'll look into it.
