Q: Have an existing 79 cap postpaid with a non-3G handset
If I get a 3G-capable handset do I need to get a reissued SIM to utilise 3G
features? (the existing sim was issued about 14 months ago).
(there are no SIM restrictions)...So I can just place SIM in new 3G handset
and then have high speed data access?
How does 3G data fit in with the $79 postpaid Cap inclusions?
Do I now need to add on a data bundle? (Before I used GPRS with $1 per 5min
sessions).

I required a new SIM with Optus; considering Optus and Vodafone use
exactly the same 3G infrastructure I believe that you will also require
a new one.

Everyone needs a 3G SIM

I believe Optus will soon allow 2.5G sims to use either the 3G or 2.5G
networks to balance network capacity. Don't know when is going to
happen but I read some info on it a couple of weeks ago

and the answer is the same, a 2G SIM cant use the 3G network in a 3G phone

From what I know about 3G UMTS, it is a superset of GSM and supports
everything GSM does plus more (i.e. the 3G data, video calling etc etc)

To the extent this is true, it's only because UMTS phones are
typically dual-mode, with support for GSM TDMA architecture as
well as the UMTS flavour of CDMA.

They'll give you a new SIM alongside with the phone. I couldn't be bothered
to activate it and just use my red sim instead
as I prefer to use my 2.5G phones and give the 6280 to my girlfriend that
uses Optus non 3G.
re. data , iirc they are outside the $79 cap. For data, the best deal imho
is still with 3.

There are only two denominations not legal tender.
As for your 2 cents worth, well, you can spend up to 20 cents worth of
them...doesn't get you far....maybe further than your banter..in either case
, quite a few cents short of the full quid.

Dunno what drugs you are on, 1c coins and 2c coins are still legal tender,
so are pre-decimal currency.
