A friend has resurrected his old Nokia 5110 as a backup phone and has purchased a new Li-ion battery
for it from Dick Smith. The old batteries were NiMH.  Will his old charger do for the Li-ion battery
or should he buy a new charger?

Thanks.

No.

Yes. The charging characteristics are quite different.

I'm pretty sure the plug pack supplies current (obviously) but the phone
itself manages the charging.

But having said that 5110s didn't come with Li-ion batteries, so it probably
won't be "smart" enough to charge them irrepective of the plug pack.

It works the same.
I had the same Li-ion battery on my 5110 and it worked no probs with a stock
charger.

yes, all mobiles do this.

If they sell Li-ion batteries for the 5110, then it must have that ability.
Its not surprising, as Nokia commonly sold big Li-Ion extended-life
batteries in those days for other models. They were too expensive to be
standard fitting though.

Yes.

The 5110 charger will charge any battery on the 5110. Regardless of whether
its lion or nimh.

I switch b/w the Lion and nimh batteries all the time

Just noticed that my alternate battery for the 5110 is Li-ion
and its worked fine for years with the standard charger.
