CDMA phone number transfer query.

John Fitzsimons - 03 Jul 2006 05:52 GMT (1) My CDMA Qualcomm QCP-860 phone has just died and I don't know where to get a new battery (in Melbourne). Does anyone here know if/where I might get one ?
(2) Also, if I get a new phone then what limitations would I have in transferring my current phone number ? I am currently with Telstra on a flexi plan. I am pretty sure I can only change to certain brands/plans but don't know which ones.
(3) I don't particularly want a new phone, or to change to the pre paid system, BUT if I do then I am considering a Motorola V171. Would that allow me to move across my CDMA phone number ?
Any help with any/all of the above queries appreciated.
Regards, John.

Does anyone here know [quoted text clipped - 12 lines] > > Regards, John. No idea where you would get a battery for the phone. But I would be surprised if Te$stra would restrict you in anyway from upgrading to a GSM phone. Give them a call or drop into a store and ask.
Have a look at the Nokia's, they are much more friendly to use than Motorola. Nokia 6101, 6102 6103 or the 6111 would probably be in the same market as the Motorola V171.

sparky - 03 Jul 2006 07:20 GMT Try http://cellink.com.au they could send you a battery. As for taking your number to a another should not be a problem.

Some examples:
www.unisonmobile.com.au/products/mobile.jsp - Vodafone GSM network www.sctelco.com.au/YourMobileMain.htm - this is a good one because you can get $0 CDMA as well as Telstra GSM from tham www.exetel.com.au/mobile_plans.php - they have a $5 plan and stand out because of no flagfall www.koalatelecom.com.au/mobiles.html - another $0 plan
I'm sure other people will add to this list...

>I'm sure other people will add to this list... Wow ! You guys in this newsgroup really "know your stuff". Thanks for the links as well. :-)
Now for a few "newbie" questions. How do those last links work ? Does one cancel an existing carrier and then go to them ? Or do they do the transfer to themselves (if you aren't on an existing contract) ?
(1) If one isn't on a contract will one be charged anything extra by Telstra for closing one's account ?
(2) Will the above carriers charge anything extra for arranging to transfer one's existing Telstra service to them ? On top of any "activation" fee.
Regards, John.

You get to wear the fact that you havent completed your contract.

I have been trying to work out the "catch". Going to eg. Exetel, it seems that I might be able to still use the Telstra network but at half the price I am currently paying.
Though the http://www.exetel.com.au/mobile_plans.php page doesn't make it clear whether they could replace my CDMA and Telstra Flexiplan or whether the charges listed are only for pre-paids.
The Southern Cross link at ; http://www.sctelco.com.au/YourMobileMain.htm looks a bit more hopeful if that is the case however.

They wont be able to let you use a CDMA handset.

As CDMA appears to be going in a few years I was hoping for a battery to last until then. Thank you for the offer however. Appreciated.

Thanks to the help here I have now fixed up the "where" part of my query. Now I have a "How" problem.
(1) How does one get the battery off the back of the 860 ? It looks like it might need an Allen key. A very very very small one. Does anyone know whether that might be correct and/or the size ?
(2) Where would one buy very very small Allen keys ? I think Bunnings here in Melbourne SE might sell them, but I am not so sure that they would be small enough for this type of thing. Is there such a thing as a "computer toolkit" ? A set of small screwdrivers etc. If so would that include the right tool ? Who/where could I get such an item/kit ?
(3) A question for anyone here who is familiar with the 860. Yes, I DID RTFM but I still couldn't work out how to find/erase text messages. I don't want to read them BUT I don't want to keep getting the "Out of memory" message either.
Can anyone here help with any/all of the above please ?
Regards, John.

Well, two things here.
One, I've removed the battery a few times with a micro-screwdriver, no probs. However, when I adjust my specs and the light is right, I can see into the recess and it looks like a Torx as claimed.
But ive only removed the battery twice in 5 yrs so thats ok for me.
