There won't be lots of calls, and there is no problem with giving the
callers the temporary prepaid number. It's to maintain contact with Oz once
or twice a week, and to make accommodation bookings if internet facilities
are difficult or expensive.
Does this mean getting a GSM phone on Oz and a suitable prepaid sim in
Europe?

Yeah, that's one obvious approach and simplifys
updating the GSM phone when you are back here again.
You can obviously get the GSM phone over there too, but
quite a few of those are locked so you need to be careful.
