They don't want you using a non-3g phone. It costs them more as you
have to use the Telstra GSM network all the time.
(prepay $29 plan?)

If it switch to GSM mode and still have crap reception, then Telstra
coverage in area is also not good.
Had that problem AGES ago and that's why I move back to Vodafone.
