I need to replace my CDMA phone. Does anyone here have a
recommendation for a replacement please ?

I do not want a phone with a card in it that I have to constantly
keep renewing.

I would also prefer NOT to have text messaging...

Web access...

Email facilities...

Photo capability...

Something to make a cup of coffee in the morning...

etc. etc.

In other words I want a phone to make PHONE CALLS. Yes, I know
that is a rather radical notion BUT can anyone suggest something
suitable please ?

A bonus would be something I could buy without having to be tied
into a phone plan.

Regards, John.

Questions:
Which carrier are you currently with.
How important is coverage? (i.e. are you out in the middle of nowhere where
the coverage levels of CDMA are important)

Telstra.

I live in Melbourne metro but I go to places like Warragul in country
Victoria. I am perfectly happy with my CDMA phone but it needs
replacing and there is little point getting a CDMA replacement with
CDMA closing down.

GSM has good coverage along the Princes Highway/Freeway. But it starts
to get patch as you head into East Gippsland. For that, you're better
off with NextG. But, as of two weeks ago, NextG's coverage isn't up to
that of CDMA's as I found out.

$99

If you wait a little longer, Telstra's NextG may come out in prepaid.

Expensive at the moment, otherwise. Have you spoken to Telstra about
an upgrade? They're doing deals for CDMA users.

NextG ? What's that ?

Actually, I did get a letter from them about upgrades but I have
mislaid it.  :-(

That is a good price but I don't know if vodaphone have as good a
coverage in places such as Warragul, Moe, Morewell, Traralgon etc. in
country Victoria.

Thank you for the recommendation. I will see if I can find out how the
coverage compares to Telstra.

Don't know those places, here is a coverage map,

NextG is Telstra's replacement to CDMA and a leap forward in speed and
reliability on GSM. http://www.nextg.com.au .

The union bludger has found that the NextG coverage is pretty decent there.

Better than GSM.

Yes.

That last is pure bullshit. And its got a dismal
choice of handsets compared with GSM too.

You beat me to it.   :-)

Well, even though I am happy with the reliability of CDMA in the
country areas that I have gone to IF it is better then that could be
handy.    :-)

Not sure however how the NextG compares to the other
G's 3G ? 2G ? GSM ? All pretty confusing for "newbies"
IMO.

Thank you, and the other contributors to this thread.

Such as?

I'm starting to think that I may have jumped the boat a bit quick. When
I transfered to NextG from CDMA the local Telstra shop didn't really
offer me any deals that weren't available via say the Telstra website.
Case in point was the data blocks and a coupla months free data use, or
whatever it is. I'm chasing that one up.

Oh, for those interestd, I got my second bill for my NextG phone
yesterday. This month I racked up nearly $40 of data packet charges, and
for very little data use.

Unfortunately it's not itemised. I'll be chasing this up with Telstra on
Monday.

Its all itemised, what are you on about? Look in the Packet Data charges
section

I was refering to the online version where I couldn't find any itemised
data. I've received the paper one today which does have the itemised
data. The list only shows the date and the amount in kb and cost. Pity
it doesn't also show what sites I visited...

:-)

Whatever, for something that I rarely use now, since the gadget factor
has worn off, it still cost me considerably more than I expected it
will.

I'll wait and see for the third bill before I decide whether a data pack
is worth buying.

If it's for coverage then NextG is really your only choice. All of the
NextG phones have all the features that you don't want. Given that the
basis of the NextG network is all this fancy stuff, it's unlikely that
they'll make a phone that doesn't do all this.

What a stupid thing to say.

If this was a perfect world, we, probably, wouldn't
be in it.

Nope. The only people who would want to text message me are spammers.
No thanks. I already get sufficient spam through my email account.

I also don't want a repeat of my current Qualcomm QCP-860 phone text
situation. Regularly having it "beep" at me "Msg memory is full..." is
pretty annoying. Pressing the envelope key did/does NOT give me a list
of text messages as per the instruction manual. So I cannot see/erase
what is there.

Its stupid for so many reasons
- a) almost all new phones (if not all), have text messaging
- b) youve always had the choice to ignore incoming messages, or bar
incoming SMS through your provider

Seems to work fine for me, as well as every other QCP 860 owner out there

I think he is after a rotary-dial mobile. Might be some spare in the Maxwell
Smart props box, aka shoephone.

I guess the idea of "choice" is something the Telcos haven't heard of.

Been there. Done that. After being told to turn this off telstra has
re-enabled the service and/or I have accidentally pressed some button
that turned it on again.

Well, perhaps I am doing something wrong ? The manual on page 26 says
"Press (the envelope icon on the keypad) to display the messages
list."

When I do that nothing in the display changes at all. What steps do
you take to see old text messages ?

Hi,

Try this one. Has full Optus coverage and simple GSM phones:

http://www.isim.com.au/Prepaid/Home.aspx

at 39 cents a minute any time/day to any number in Oz is pretty good these days

You only pay for the calls -  no connection fees , no plans, no minimum to
spend per month etc..

Once setup on the net, recharge is done automatically

Regards,
Ori
