Southern Cross opinions ?

Does anyone here have any experience with Southern Cross ?

For mobile and/or landline ?

They look pretty good BUT the problem with things being "too
good to be true" is that they usually are !

Any opinions/experiences good/bad ?

I am thinking of having them for a country Victoria mobile and/or
Melbourne metro landline.

We have 2 mobiles (i x CDMA, 1 x GSM) on account with them and have had
great service and no problems. I would recommend them to anyone for
light useage. For heavy useage, I would look at capped plans with other
providers. As SC Telco uses the Telstra networtk, it is one of the few
resellers that does CDMA and the coverage for the GSM is also good.

I still have a data only account with Vodafone as SC Telco is too
expensive.

What's going to happen when the CDMA is turned off, will you be given a Next
Gen phone?

We will cross that bridge when it happens.  A free phone from a service
provider always has hooks - like they are not giving it to you as you
pay for it by increased charges over a period of time.

As our CDMA phone is mainly for country usage and is to make calls as
do text's - not anything else, we expect to be able to pickup a new
basic NextG phone relatively cheaply sometime in the future when there
are actually a few more NextG phone suppliers around (preferably
Nokia).

Mobile.

Not in this case. They deliver as advertised.

Good. That is probably what I will have with them.

Yep. Have had a CDMA service with them for a number of years with no issues.

Thank you Brendon. I am thinking of moving my CDMA to them, and
getting another phone for someone else, also to go with them.

As the latter is only for emergencies, and receiving calls, I am
hoping that they keep to their promise of no charges during a month if
the service isn't used. I also hope that the sim card does not need
"topping up" if it isn't used for months on end.

I am considering getting a Nokia 1112 or Nokia 2310 as they seem
to be the cheapest.

You can move a CDMA phone over with no problem and no charges. From
memory if you get your account via email there are also no monthly
charges unless you use the phone.

A CDMS phone does not have a SIM card. If you move a GSM phone with a
SIM card to SC Telco, you will get a bill for $30 for the SIM card.

We have used SC Telco for over 6 months with no un-expected charges and
we are light users.

I moved my CDMA phone over to SC about 12 months ago. Although postings
here led me to believe there would be no monthly charge apart from call
costs, I was surprised to find they put me down for a $5/month charge.
I was informed of this charge only at the tail end of the sign-up procedure
when they summarized what I'd just signed up for!

(I had to just now consult google to refresh my memory ....)

I rang back next day, and was able to get it reduced to $0/month by allowing
direct debit of my bill, but the default policy of some of their monkey's
seemed (at that time) to be they'd put new customers down for a $5/month
charge and not let on that this could be avoided. (After all, why not allow
customers to pay $60 per year if they're willing to do so, for the trouble
of posting 12 bills?)

BTW, I have no complaints at all about their service or customer service
since I signed up and I recommend them for what you have in mind.
