Well, contrary to what I thought it would be like - I have to say its not
bad at all.

Sure I get bumped onto telstra from time to time, the service actually works
very well.

I was previously on B (month to month) on a $29 cap and am on the same plan
now but with an extra $70 worth of calls to 3 which for me is good.

The free phone (6288) and 6500 FF points was merely a bonus. So I have a 2
year contract which I can handle.

Unlocked the phone, enjoying BBC TV and setup all my preferences with just
one phone call to Bangalore which took nearly an hour. But took the advice
on here and was patient!

Overall, highly recommended - cost and feature wise, really up there right
now.....

Good for you, supprting an Australian company like Telstra.

I was under the impression it is not possible to have a phone from 3
unlocked.  Could you please clarify how you went about this?

It's not.. it's just that the 3 coverage is very poor outside metro
areas, so they have a deal to roam to the much better Telstra coverage.

Those 3'ers, once they get you in you pay through the nose to get out. A
very bad idea to sign up with them.

They are only just recovering from multiple hardware failures with their
Lemon LG phones.

My daughter and her husband each have a capped $30 plan with 3 and its
3G service. They have these LG 3G phones. Only issue that I'm aware of
is that the son-in-law's phone occasionally locks up and he has to
reboot it (remove battery).

Other than that, they're happy with the service, and particularly with
the $30 cap. If Telstra offered a similar deal I could probably do away
with the VOIP service and use the mobile exclusively for voice calls.

As for the coverage, it works fine for them, as they spend most of their
time in the coverage area.

The only thing that we've discovered is that a video call between say
our daughter on her LG and my NextG Samsumg A501 can be somewhat choppy
and slow. More akin to a webcam on dialup, really. It's difficult to say
whether it's 3's end or our end that's the poor performer as I don't
know anyone else with a NextG phone that I can test the video calling on
in a purely NextG context.

Depends on the phone. For example, the Nokia 6280 cannot be unlocked, while
the 6288 can. All their Sony Ericssons can be unlocked as well.

Incidentally, there's nothing stopping them from unlocking the phones they
say they can't unlock. It's not that they *can't*, but rather that they
*won't*.

http://www.davinciteam.com/db2020.php will certainly take care of the
3-branded K800i.
