Anyone had any experience with this?

A friend's daughter has the new device (HipTop2) and unlimited internet
browsing, email etc., for $50.00 per month for both plan & device.
Sounds pretty good. No phone cap in the plan, pay for each call, but
phone plans can be added.
Currently I am on the Optus Blackberry Platinum plan with unlimited
internet access, Blackberry push mail etc., $79.00 with $300.00 call
cap, but this looks even better. Had to supply my own Blackberry with
the Optus plan.

Just as an aside - how do you keep the spam off the Blackberry?

No problem. Both the Blackberry server and the server that handles the
original mail before forwarding to Blackberry have full filtering
capability. I suspect that many ISP controlled Blackberry servers also
have stringent spam filtering. It has never been a problem.
To reduce the volume of mail to my Blackberry, I use a "forward only if
conditions are met" filter. I know what urgent mail I might expect will
contain re headers and only forward that. For instance, if I want to
forward questions from eBay buyers, I will filter for "question" and
"eBay member" (with appropriate headers) to be forwarded. I sell quite a
bit on eBay and need to respond to questions quickly if I want the
highest bids. I also have mail from people who I am involved with in a
business sense plus family forwarded. The rest I read at my desk when I
have the time.
Blackberrys are truly functional gadgets - earn/save me a lot of money
while reducing stress. I have lived too long tethered to a computer,
this allows freedom.
Talking of tethering, you can use a Blackberry as a "tethered" modem to
get broadband access for any laptop/notebook etc. Very handy and a great
saving on WiFi costs.

Sounds pretty good on paper, but it's Tel$tra - there's gotta be a
catch - at no time in their history have they offered a plan thats
better value for money than the competition, let alone "unlimited"
anything without significant catches.
Any chance of a Tel$tra URL to see the pricing/conditions attached to
the plan?

This is the plan: http://www.telstra.com.au/hiptop/the_deal.htm
You have to go to a Telstra Shop to get the phone. If you take the plan,
the phone is available at $20.00 per month on a MRO (Mobile Repayment
Option) for 24 months. Call are at a one off "as required" basis and
pretty expensive unless you also add a cap plan to the deal. The deal is
for private use only, no business use allowed. Not sure how they can
enforce that.
Unlike the Blackberry, you cannot use it as a tethered modem for a
notebook, nor can you use VOIP on it. I use VOIP on my BlackBerry quite
a lot.
