Anyway I can use it? Asks for a passcode to start which I don't have.

Err, set the code on the deice you're communicating with and then pair the
two.

Not sure I follow. I'm trying to hook it to my MacBook. The dongle
won't do anything until I type in the passcode (on the laptop) which
came with the thing and apparently I have thrown it away.

Nearly all quality bluetooth devices use "0000"
