Telstra Corporation Ltd chief executive Sol Trujillo says the telco would be
largely insulated from any downturn in spending if Australia was hit by a
recession.

The sub-prime mortgage crisis in the United States has sparked fears the
country is on course for a recession, with murmurs that Australia could also
be on track for a downturn.

Mr Trujillo doubted a recession would hit Australia, but said the telco's
services were "critical" to most people's personal and business lives.

"We're probably less vulnerable in terms of the variation that others might
see in terms of spending patterns," Mr Trujillo told Sky News Sunday
Business.

"I still want to make calls. I still want to be reached. I still want to
transact business. I still want to search for a job. I still want to do all
of the things that might be part of my day to day life," he added.

Telstra this week delivered a 13 per cent jump in interim profit of $1.9
billion, underpinned by strong revenues from its broadband and mobile
divisions.

The telco is more than halfway through a five-year transformation program to
rebuild its networks, boost margins and cut about one-fifth of its
workforce.

Yes, I want to do all of that....using a provider other than
Telstra/BogPond.

But not necessarily as many of the frivolous ones, fuckwit.

What you want and what you have the cash to pay for are entirely different matters, fool.

And quite a bit of that will evaporate if there is a real recession, fuckwit.
