TELSTRA remains on track to close its CDMA network late April,
Communications Minister Senator Stephen Conroy said.

The carrier and the federal Government today released details of a covenant
that will allow the carrier to migrate customers to its Next G network in
preparation to switch off the network on April 28.

"Telstra is working towards the deadline of 28 April to turn off the CDMA
network and consumers should act on the basis that it will be switched off,"
Senator Conroy said.

Senator Conroy said that he would still need to be satisfied that the goals
set out in the change-over plan released today had been met.

The plan is based on findings in reports by the Australian Communications
and Media Authority (ACMA) delivered to the federal Government in January.

Under the plan Telstra would be required to ensure it retained adequate
stocks of handsets capable of meeting its coverage needs of customers in
rural areas.

It would also be required to fill in coverage gaps identified by ACMA in its
report.

Telstra is scheduled to report to Senator Conroy on its progress on March
20.
