C. Todd - 11 Jun 2004 16:40 GMT I just signed up for CallPlus wireless due to the "no roaming charges" feature of the service.. Well, it looks like that's over, for the time being.
I put over 300 minutes on my account, and was driving today, and went into roam.. Thought I'd try my first roaming call.. All was good until I went through the deal with re-entering the number I'm calling, and got a prompt saying only 81 minutes were remaining!!!
I called CallPlus customer service, and they said YES, starting at the beginning of this month, they were charging 4x the amount of "units" for a roaming call!!!!! They said this was due to a decision by AT&T at the beginning of this month (only a few days ago?) and they're not sure if it was permanent, but "a lot of people were complaining"..
The CS rep I spoke to was named Tamika, and she seemed to know what was up -- so your mileage may vary if you call.. (I know some of the CS reps are not that informed.)
Since I only got CallPlus to roam in analog areas (I'm in rural areas a lot, and have TMobile and Sprint for when I'm not..) I'm very, very annoyed and feel I've thrown away some money. I guess I'll use up my minutes locally, but I'm back to square one as far as a decent roaming provider is concerned.
I'm surprised this hasn't shown up anywhere else online though -- or nobody's noticed this in the first week in June? (Unless they just started recently..)
My guess is that maybe this was simply to get CallPlus's competition with free2go off their backs.. Really lousy, though..
JoshIII - 11 Jun 2004 18:03 GMT Good thing I decided to wait on going with CallPlus & Locus International prepaid until all the dust settles from the Cingular AT&T acquistion!
TracFone will soon be offering a Nokia 1100 which is a dual-band GSM phone (850 + 1900 MHz). Their current GSM phone is the Nokia 3390 and is only a single band (PCS) GSM. TracFone GSM models offers free roaming, but the GSM network coverage isn't all that great yet.
I think I will get one of the 1100's for my roaming phone instead of Callplus/Locus now.

I don't know if there are any GSM TracFones yet.

JoshIII - 12 Jun 2004 00:01 GMT TracFone has been offering a GSM phone for about a year now. Initially it was only available in NC, California, and NY.
I don't know how many states have the GSM TracFone now, but I'm in South Carolina and its available here.
The original GSM TracFone model was the Nokia 3390, which is a GSM digital only mode phone that operates at 1900MHz (PCS) only.
The new model, already posted on the www.tracfone.com website, but not available for purchase yet, is the Nokia 1100. It is a GSM digital only mode phone which operates at 850MHz and 1900 MHz.
The GSM TracFones are the only TracFone(s) that offer free roaming for some reason.
I know Cingular is also offering the Nokia 1100 in their line-up now.
The T racFone Nokia 1100 will primarily be using the Cingular network.

> The GSM TracFones are the only TracFone(s) that offer free roaming for some > reason. Because, unlike with the TDMA and CDMA TracFones, their aren't many "unfriendly" carriers to roam on in GSM- most GSM operators are already Cingular's "preferred" roaming partners. That means lower roaming charges (for Cingular, and therefore TracFone), so they "pass the savings onto you".
John S. - 12 Jun 2004 13:10 GMT >How does it use both CDMA and GSM ? The network used depends on where you buy your phone and the company in that reagion that they have their contract with.

Really lousy, though.. Thanks so much, for the heads up. Darn! I knew the new .15 cpm rate was a little too good to be true. Appears Callplus is passing on the higher roaming rates to end users. Not surprising, since this has been the trend for every cellco's calling plans, but this is going to hit some users very hard. So, anytime a request for number rentry is made that's an indication that 4X roaming fees are in effect? Any other tips or patterns to indentify roaming rate calls?

So if you had quire a bit of airtime stocked up, you might not notice it right away.

If it's asking you to enter the number a second time, that means you're off the AT&T TDMA network, and you're roaming, and therefore you'll be hit with the 4x rate.
True shame, really.
Also, I am not able to get to the locus or CallPlus websites tonight! That doesn't bode well; but let's hope it's just a glitch -- or they're finally updating their site, perhaps.
I'm hoping to do an ESN switch tomorrow to my older Nokia 6360 and hope I can return this 1260 I got at Target once deactivated. I like the fact that it can send e-mail with CallPlus whereas the 6360 can't; but it's not enough for me to keep it on a service I won't be using much.
BTW.. Has anyone had much luck with an ESN switch with Locus/Callplus? Also, is CallPlus Wireless different from "CallPlus Global PCS"? The ESN change form only has check boxes for CallPlus Global and Locus Mobile, and said one must be checked.. I was hoping the former is correct?!? Don't mean to hijack the thread that I started, but if someone could just give me a heads up on this and get back to the issue of whether or not anyone can get to the CP/LM website tonight, I'd appreciate it!

Bill Radio - 14 Jun 2004 05:06 GMT > BTW.. Has anyone had much luck with an ESN switch with Locus/Callplus? I tried to switch my ESN last Thursday by calling CallPlus CS. The phones line were down all day until about 3pm. They had a big computer problem. They took my ESN change, but told me it would take 24 hours. After 25 hours I called back and they made the switch again and it took mere seconds. The computers were back up to speed.
