I just wanted to let people here know that it appears that
CallPlus/Locus is now charging for roaming - as of this week.
I called Customer Service and verified this; they informed me that a
call outside of AT&T TDMA service areas will cost at a 4:1 ratio of
"units" on your account.
I verified this by getting my phone into analog mode (inside my
building phone usually switches to analog) and the automated voice
announced 82 minutes remaining, when my account had 329 earlier this
morning on AT&T's network.
I'm not sure if there's not been much outcry because previous
activations might have been "grandfathered" in; but I activated last
week, and I am definitely being charged roaming -- and this was
confirmed by one of their CS reps.
Also notice the following text, which is new, on the callplus site:
http://callpluswireless.com/html/cpw_products_services.html
(Under the graphic with pricing)
"Please note your lower airtime rates will apply when "AT&T" appears
in your phone's display. Other direct dialed calls will be charged at
a higher rate. See store, user guide or visit www.CallPlusWireless.com
for details. AT&T is a registered trademark of AT&T Corporation.
Service provided by Locus Telecommunications, Inc. * Free
international calling to 50+ preselected countries. Service not
available in all areas.See store for details."
> Get LocusMobile starter kit with 80 airtime minutes from eBay (sold for $5-10
> by user lebjax) and activate a TDMA ATT phone.

> MMS or picture sanding: even for email checking ATTWS chages on average $0.50!

Depending on the denomination of the minute refill card, roaming rates
could be $0.60 per minute or higher. I highly doubt "grandfathering"
is going to allow keeping the old rate. I just loaded an old $40 PIN.
What would really suck is get less minutes AND 4X roaming charges.
Wonder if those older pins (~160 for $40) would include free roaming?
Callplus/Locus has been a good deal, but the new roaming rates
significantly changes the cost for some users. It's been my
experience, with any type of low end/bottom of the barrel cut rate
telecom product, one's at the mercy of the provider.
The only type action the "bean counters" at Callplus/Locus would
understand is loss of revenue/customers. I think complaining is just
going to be a waste of time.
