USA Prepaid SIM card - Hawaii

Is there anywhere online that I can buy a prepaid SIM card (no contract, no
handset, no commitments) for use in Hawaii USA, that can be posted over to
Australia.

It would appear that Ebay is the only way at present (though some ads there
look questionable). The carriers themselves seem to only want to sell
bundles.

Also, what is the deal with a local number on cell? Do I ask for an 808
(Hawaii) prefix?

And vailidity of the card..... I will be in Hawaii late September.

Find the location of a T-Mobile store in Hawaii. Pick up a prepaid SIM
only kit for around $50 from the walk-in store. Note this has to be a
real T-Mobile store and not some little dealer stand. Recharges cards
can be bought from 7-11 stores and others.

Good advice, I've made many purchases via ebay and in this, prepaid card
have been happy about 1/3 of the time. Being unable to test the product
before you need it would leave you with a problem when you arrive in
Hawaii. Make sure your phone is unlocked and will accept the sim card, if
possible have someone test the card and phone in Hawaii before you
arrive. If you have someone who can add you to their cell plan in Hawaii
you can get the best rates, but make sure to understand what it will cost
to cancel service when you leave. The text rate on prepaid is resonable
with .10 per message sent and free to receive.

Because usually independent dealers will not sell you the SIM card kit
alone and will want to sell you a phone with it. The corporate stores
if they have the kits will sell you a kit only without having to buy a
phone.

If you want it posted to you that's probably the only way. Just look
at their feedback to determine whether you think payment to them is
worth the risk.

If you're getting it through eBay it's likely that you'll get whatever
area code/number is assigned to the account (if the account is live
and active - if the account needs to be activated you can just call
customer care and request a number in Hawaii.)

If the card has already been activated you'll have whatever the expiry
period is on that account. Accounts activated until 30 June 2004 will
have a one year expiry. Otherwise normal expiry time on a $25 refill
of the account will give you just 90 days after which any funds in the
account will go away and some time after that the account will be
deactivated.

At least with T-Mobile. You can change your phone number as you wish,
area code included. But there's a limit on the number of times for a
particular time period.
