I'm going to France for 10 days and have rented a phone from a UK
company that uses the orange network. Is there a website where people
in the U.S. could go to text me easily and for free??? (I'll have a
number that goes 447795xxxxxx)

Only a couple of key people have the vaguest idea how to do this via
their own cell phones. For U.S. phones I often use the SMS part of
mobile.yahoo.com, but the U.K. equivalent wants to charge to send a
text. Thanks!

Rent?
Wouldn't it have been simpler and cheaper to have bought a cheap
PAYT phone in France ?
Or at least a French Sim

Roaming on a rented UK phone in France doesn't make much sense to me

From web try www.cbfsms.com for sending text to UK phones.

OR register your phone on orange website and then from their also
people can send you text (if you can share your user name / password
with them)

You could setup an account with VGSMail (www.vgsmail.com). Along with the
other VGSMail benefits (see the website) you can get an email2sms address
(not enabled by default but you can switch it on). People send to it via
email and it gets forwarded to your phone as a text. Each message you
receive will cost you 3.9 UK pence. Not free but not too pricy.

Steve (Terry) is right though. You should not have rented a phone. You
could have bought a local cheap PAYT phone and/or SIM card and saved
yourself some money.

Yeah, but I wanted to know the phone number BEFORE I left. The phone
rental is all of $3 a day. Thanks!

and what are the call costs?

You can buy UK and French PAYT Sims online with their numbers,
and have them shipped to the US or anywhere.
