On a line still under contract, we need to port the number to a different
carrier. However, we also need to establish a new line from the original
carrier. So, we want to know if "ported-from" carriers are receptive to a
customer avoiding a termination penalty by immediately restoring service
with a new number to complete the contract commitment. Our immediate focus
is on porting from Alltel, but as our users' needs change we need
flexibility. We would like to know how other, larger carriers have dealt
with customers on this issue. Anyone have experiences or policies to share?

Thanks in advance.

What did your carrier say? They of course are the only ones that know what the
answer is.

Typically the contract is tied to the NUMBER. If you move the number you are
liable for the contract termination fee.

I suspect that this is the tact that they will take.

New numbers and new phone instruments are typically tied to a new contract.
