I was in central Kentucky (Lexington and Georgetown) last week, and had
VZW coverage (not roaming) everywhere.

In the end, more than they wanted freedom, they wanted comfort and security.
And in the end, they lost it all - freedom, comfort and security.

VZW has decent native coverage in some parts of Kentucky, primarily in
or near the Cincinnati, Lexington and Louisville areas (I-71/75
corridors).
If you take out those sections, VZW is roaming on a patchwork of local
and regional carriers in Kentuck, though it appears much of this
roaming is now digital, and I believe even included in America's
Choice.
As far as native VZW coverage, Kentucky's not one of their better
states, tho. roamer1 could probably explain why...

As is Sprint. Kentucky hasn't traditionally been friendly to CDMA carriers like
VZW and Sprint. Try Cingular, I guess... Or maybe AT&T...

Verizon is terrible outside of major cities in KY. Much of the roaming in
Central KY ouside of Verizon coverage is analog. Cingular is a much better
choice for KY.

From what I've been hearing, a lot of the VZW roaming in KY is now
CDMA digital, thanks to some carriers making the conversion. It's not
entirely digital, but it's somewhat more than it used to be.
It's still not native, though.
