On one hand, I'm reading that the Motorola phones have unique, random unlock
codes assigned by Motorola and that various clips and unlock code generators are
useless.

On the other hand, I'm reading ads that claim the advertiser can create an
unlock code for a v180.

Every phone manufacturer uses a different algorithm to subsidy lock
their phones. You could try an unlocking service like
www.motounlocknow.com. They should be able to do it based on the IMEI
of your phone. TM won't give you an unlock code unless you got the
phone from them, or in the case of a sell, unless the original user of
the phone requests it first.

$55 to unlock a phone?

But the claim is that Motorola uses a random number generator to produce
their lock codes, so the IMEI is irrelevant. That is what is done to
subsidy-lock CDMA phones; the lock code only exists in a database of the
provider who locked it, and short of subverting the firmware of the
phone to bypass the lock, there is no other way to get it.

That sounds like it has promise... USB2 cable and all that...
