Which phone holds the best signal

I have a 3 yr. old cellphone, Samsung SPH-A660 with Sprint. I was thinking
of maybe trying Verizon and tried their LG 5200, but cannot get most times
even 2 bars at my house. I can hardly make a call or the service is not
there at all, or the signal fades and completes the call. The old Samsung
does work though, even with 2 bars.

Is there a good basic phone either with Sprint or Verizon that will hold or
capture the most signal?

The is a mast 1.2 miles away from my house but I do not know whether it is
Sprint or Verizon or neither.
DonR. - 18 May 2006 04:01 GMT
I agree the LG5200 has terrible reception. Verizon's best reception phone is
the Motorola E815.

I heard that about the E815. But Analog seems important sometimes and E815
does not have it. It is also a phone release years ago, right?

Is there a way to just download the pictures from the E815 directly into
your computer?

Yes, I would think so. Why?

I've never had a camera built into a phone & was just curious.  The quality
of what I've seen in the early versions left a lot to be desired but a 1.3
meg might come in handy at times.

Its VERY handy, but the short focal length of the lens will distort the
outer forth of the picture, buts thats a minor issue.

For a cheap, basic tri-mode phone with very good reception, you might
try the Nokia 6015i.  Don't know if they're still sold new.  I've had
good luck buying replacement phones off Ebay (you're usually safe if you
stick with sellers that have at least 50 feedbacks and a rating of >98%).

Curious, why does it matter how long ago the phone was released as long
as it does what you want?

My son has one of those.  18 months old and only works on speaker phone now.

Pretty impressive that an 18-month-old boy can use a speakerphone.

(sorry, I couldn't resist ;-)

It is only about a year old. You canstill find some new or excellent V710's
on Ebay. It is tri-mode with incredible reception. The Mot V276 also is a
tri-mode with excellent reception. Smaller size than the V710 and E815.

This is one of the stupidest questions ever asked, and it's asked all
the time - "Which phone holds the best signal?"

If there was 1 phone that held the signal the best, who would buy the
2nd best?  Each carrier would only have 1 phone.  It's like asking
"Which car is the best", or "which color is the best?"

Then you received quite a few responses that mentioned the E815.
Personally, I believe it's a great phone, but you found something not to
like about it, it's not a recently released phone.

Now I get it.  You don't really want to know the phone with the best
reception, or one that holds a signal the best.  You want a newly
released phone, because the E815 was released late last summer (not
years ago as you put it), and that seems to bother you.

Now, when someone tells you about a newly released phone with great
reception, you'll come back that it is expensive (because all new phones
are), and you specifically asked for a "good basic phone".  Basic phones
are cheap and usually free. Notice I didn't say they are great.

In this case, you'd be a fool not to consider the E815.  A full featured
phone that was $200 when released, and it's performance is no different
now that it can be had for free.  There won't be any analog in 2 years
for that to be an issue.

Avoid the E815 if you need service outside the urban and suburban core
areas. Even withing some major cities, there are times where you end up
an AMPS, i.e. my relative foolishly got an E815 in San Francisco, and it
doesn't work inside her workplace (a hospital). I have found only two
places I can't get even an analog signal, one is inside the new Kaiser
building in Santa Clara, CA, and one is on the bottom floor of Ikea in
East Palo Alto.

My experience is that when signal is that weak and the phone falls over
to AMPS your phone typically does not have enough power for the cell
site to hear it.

Also the battery will get sucked down big time in analog, usually lasts 3 to
4 days in Digital only, but only a day or two in analog areas.

Fraid the e815 was out about a year ago (June 2005, NOT years), that figure
is usually bandied about by the liars that hate them/verizon, and will try

Yes, forgot to mention that. I was out of town working in a poor signal
area using the last trimode phone I had and the phone fell over to
analog. The battery was almost dead in a few hours and I didn't have a
charger with me. After that I locked out analog on that phone and my
current phone is digital only. Since then I have never encountered a
situation in over 3 years where analog would have been of any use.

I have a Moto E815 on Verizon. It has the best signal of any phone I've ever
had, bar none. I will show 2 bars (FWIW) it places my other VZW phones can't
even make a call.

I saw it today in the Verizon store but was surprised they want still a lot
of money for it, a phone released 2 -3 years ago.
With rebate by mail (unfortunately) it is still $80 and I need 2 for the
family plan.

You might want to see what deals they're offering at their online
store:  www.verizonwireless.com
A lot of times the prices are better.
ritter197 - 20 May 2006 00:44 GMT
I tried the E815 by Moto and made calls in the State of Md. The calls would
fade or totally disappear to the other end.
Yet - I have 3 towers by Horizon within 1.2 and 3.0 miles.
I had to give up on Horizon and returned the phones.

I went to Sprint and got another Samsung, this one a SPH-A580 and it works
fine. No dropped calls, no cutouts.

So I am back and happy with Sprint now. As I was for 5 years before, but I
really wanted to give Horizon a fair try.

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions.

I also have the E815.  In the building where I work, most people have
to stand outside to get reception.  I can sit in my office and get
perfect reception.

I had Sprint and Verizon at the same time using identical phones. This was
maybe 3 years ago and by far, Verizon was the best overall. Can't speak
about Sprint today but I get great coverage on my RAZR V3C. Maybe even
better than the 2 other LG phones I own.

I guess it depends where you live. I am in Gaithersburg, MD and the LG 5200
is no good here to make calls from my house with Verizon.

What about the old Motorola StarTAC? We used one on Verizon for years
and it
had excellent reception. It still works fine, but looks kind of clunky
by today's standards.
Wife wanted a new one, so got the Samsung  SGH A630 which is a neat
little phone,
but haven't used it enough to know if the reception is as good as the
StarTAC.
BTW, you can by them on eBay for next to nothing.

That's because Verizon will no longer activate them, unfortunately.

Interesting. I've been told that PagePlus Cellular will activate them,
and they ride on Verizon.

Yes, I can tell you for a fact that they will activate a non-GPS phone on
PagePlus (I have a v60i with them), but this is an anomaly I don't quite
understand.

The fact is, Verizon themselves won't activate a non-GPS phone any longer,
not online nor at the first Customer Service level, anyhow. Somebody here
will probably chime in and tell us they got a CS manager to re-activate
their old StarTac. I can't speak to that.

Besides, I had five StarTacs and loved them, but have to admit the e815 is
far better in the reception department.

PagePlus also sells a variety of non-GPS phones. There is no legal
prohibition on activating a non-GPS phone, though there are good reasons
why Verizon won't do it.
EdC - 22 May 2006 03:34 GMT
The StarTac was one of the best phones Moto made, but VZW is not
allowed to activate them. The phone does not have the GPS capability
and as of Aug of 2004 VZW cannot activate them. So if anyone has a
phone that does not have the GPS capability, donate it to your local
charity, because you cant use it on VZW.
SMS - 22 May 2006 09:35 GMT
> The StarTac was one of the best phones Moto made, but VZW is not

They are allowed to, but they won't.

The carriers are required to have 95% of all handsets on their network
as GPS capable (by 12/31/05), and they cannot activate any new digital
handsets.

The FCC has two weasel words in their E911 Phase II program, that are
subject to interpretation. What does "new digital handsets" mean? Does
it refer to "all-digital" handsets, or does it refer to any handset that
has digital capability? Does "new" refer to used handsets?

The 95% rule is iron-clad, so they don't want to activate any non-E911
handsets that would lower that percentage. But there are still carriers,
on Verizon's network, that are activating non-E911 tri-mode handsets.
I.e. Pageplus will apparently even activate analog-only handsets, though
this may be an error on their web site.

I use a tracfone nokia 1100 and the spouse uses a tmobile.
We traveled across texas from Houston to Abilene and the tracfone won
every time.  It held the signal better and had by far the most
coverage.
