I have a friend whose cell phone gets call from an area code where she
used to live, but with no *phone number* being displayed on the phone
(just the aarea code is displayed), and with no messages being left.
Is there any way she can find out the number from which the calls are
being made, or the originator of the calls?

Go to court and subpoena the phone records from your carrier. Other than
that, probably not.
