Instead of signing yourselves up to be Sellphone Slaves just to get your kids a phone of their own, I think Sony and Skype have the answer.....
SKYPE ON THE PLAYSTATION PORTABLE 2000!
Buy the kids a new PSP 2000 video game with wifi and the headsets. Go to: http://skype.com/allfeatures/skypeonpsp/ and click the Sony button to upgrade its firmware on the PSP if it doesn't have Skype, already. Sign up each kid for their OWN Skype account for free on your desktop computer. Buy each one Skype Unlimited (10000 mins/month) and a local Skype In POTS phone number (unlimited incoming) for about $44/YEAR so their non-Skype-yet friends can call them and they can call any phone.
Put regular Skype on their desktop computer with a nice USB headset for $15 from Logitech so you can sleep without hearing the disgusting things her boyfriend says to her when they're in heat.
Now she has the new video game AND a really cheap wifi phone that WON'T put Dad in the poorhouse TEXTING on SELLular's ripoff system! All her friends will soon have at least Skype on their desktops, others can put Skype on their smartphones, others will get a new PSP with Skype because THEIR daddy will soon get tired of the constant whining, too.
I see a MAJOR benefit to this PSP Skype phone, right away! IT DOESN'T WORK IF THERE'S NO WIFI...She's not talking and texting while DRIVING! She's not talking and texting while IN SCHOOL when she should be studying! Is that good?
No more need of family share plans for big money to get enough minutes for the teens. They can talk all they want...even text Skype to Skype. No more family fights over the SELLphone bill with 2000 OVERAGE minutes! No more dead prepaid phones she burns up the minutes on the first 5 days of the month....and all that whining the other 26 days!
http://skype.com/allfeatures/skypeonpsp/ Skype has some of the coolest ideas......(c;
You can cut back to the $39 Sellphone plan you used to have when she was 11! And, when you go out as a family, you'll AUTOMATICALLY know where EVERY wifi hotspot is across the whole area she roams across for your laptop or tablet!.....another benefit.

You assume much:
* that my child will have a game console (no)
* that my intent, ever, is for my kids to have a phone in their room (no)

Don't you know how important it is for the kids "self esteem" to be able to do whatever they want without parental supervision? And that it is also very important for them for them to lock themselves away so they can play with electronic devices and never interact with others so they never develop social skills?

My kids do have computers; in fact, each kid has his own.
They're on a table, in the family room, facing inward.
Set the expectations early, and you get what you get. Me, I set the expectation that their life is an open book to me. It's not a mean thing. It's called PARENTING. Alas, there are too many idiots in the world and not enough actual parents.
Your child is not your best friend. You are not your child's best friend.
Diamond Dave - 15 May 2008 23:03 GMT Get Magicjack. $40 for the first year, $20 a year thereafter.
Works with any analog phone an a broadband Internet connection.
Cheaper than skHYPE.
Todd Allcock - 15 May 2008 23:21 GMT > Get Magicjack. $40 for the first year, $20 a year thereafter. Ah, but the second "P" in PSP stands for "portable" which MagicJack certainly isn't, unless your idea of a cordless phone is a laptop with a headset plugged in it!
> Works with any analog phone an a broadband Internet connection. No, it works with any analog phone and a COMPUTER hooked to a broadband connection. MJ needs a computer to serve up the advertising that will help support it's low rates.
> Cheaper than skHYPE. Yes, but infinitely less versatile.

Gee, that's where I found this post to begin with..

Like outside North America for example... ;-)

Actually, if I went to Europe a lot, I'd either get a GSM phone where I could get pre-paid SIM cards, or get a CDMA/GSM combo phone.
Skype is still all HYPE. Same with MagicCrap (MagicJack), but MagicJack is cheaper! :)
Larry - 17 May 2008 15:17 GMT > But you need Wi-Fi for Skype to work. Not with a real cell phone! No, you do not. You need 110Kbps, which is any 3G sellphone data link. I've used Skype, successfully, on 1XRTT as long as you don't do anything else while on the call. If, for instance, your weather app updates, it makes Skype stutter on 1XRTT until it's done. You won't lose the call, just be annoyed for lack of bandwidth.
You do NOT need wifi for Skype on a laptop (use aircard works great) or through a PDA or tethered sellphone....
I have no way of trying it with EDGE, but if you can bleed 110Kbps out of Edge, Skype will work fine.

As long as you remain under the 5GB/month LIMITED service, there seems to be no bitching, even though it is in violation of their AUP. As Skype can use ANY ports, we are rotating port numbers about every 2 weeks to make any kind of tracking harder than someone noting all the data from this PDA is from port 48732 every month. No sense attracting flies, right?
