They are under the wrong impression that you and your business just cannot
survive without their listing, and without being in debt to the bankers.
Many of my competitors fell into the debt trap and are no longer in
business. This depression is causing those businesses to fail that have
these debt loads bearing down on them with reduced cash flows causing
defaults. Without debt, and holding down overhead by not buying the owner
some super pickup truck to drive around on the company's nickel, most
businesses, including mine, are surviving quite nicely, as I have since
1986. When business is slack...I simply go on vacation...(c;

I have turned down D&B listing requests for years now, and my business is
doing fine.
If I need credit references for a new supplier I just use my banks and
current suppliers. Works every time.

Me, too. I still bet you're listed. D&B scans all the phone books and
autocreates listings from it, then calls the business to glean more info
for the listing.
The bankers are behind it all. It's an easy way for them to reference
businesses.

Well, I may be listed but there's not very much information there!
