I just purchased the 6000. I understand the only way to transfer photos to
my home computer is to email them, and that can get expensive. Also, I would
like to be able to transfer phonebook entries from MS Outlook so I don't
have to enter them by hand. Lastly, I wouldn't mind being able to use my
phone as a cellular modem. The kit including data cable and software is
$69.99 at my local Verizon retail store.
Questions:
(1) Where can I get a data cable for a reasonable price? I see a few of them
on Ebay, but don't know if these are adequate. Some say that they convert
the USB port to serial for data transfer
(2) Is it necessary to purchase the software, or will third party
applications (freeware, shareware) work?
(3) Do the data cable and software work reliably?
Thanks for any input or opinions.

Those cable will have a little 'blob' in the middle, and they work fine. The
phone still stays in 'usb mode'.
Check out the LG howardforums and the LG forum at wirelessadvisor.com for
many of your answers. This newsgroup seems to be aimed more at service
questions and answers than data transfer q&a.

You can buy the cable/software (drivers) from Data Pilot (Susteen) or just a
cable from many places, including futuredial. The futuredial drivers are
available free online at their website. There is an excellent open source
software available free which works on the 4400 and 6000 called bitpim. Just
do a web search for 'bitpim' and it'll be at the top or near the top of the
results.
> (3) Do the data cable and software work reliably?
Yes, in my experience they do. I have the purchased data pilot (v 3)
software, which seems to work ok for some things (mainly phonebook and
calendar). The free bitpim (there are two versions that will work with the
6000. A special version of 0.62 for the 6000 and the beta version of 0.7).
I've used both versions and am currently using the beta 0.7 version and it
works great!
Just make sure that whatever cable and drivers you end up getting that you
install the drivers BEFORE plugging in the cable for the first time!
Also be aware that you can upload your own pics (cropped and resized to 120
by 131 pixels) to the my media section of the phone. Also you can upload
midi files as ringers (under 30KB in size) and resampled MP3 clips. You can
also record voice memos and save them as ringers (example: John Doe wants to
talk to ya)...

1) I got mine from rpiwireless.com for $30.49 well worth it.
code 7zhidhg344ldhhgn for $10.00 off of any purchase on the site
2) I use an open source product called BitPim version .62 comes shipped
with the cable, but
bitpim.sourceforge.com version .7 is out and handles contacts better, I.E.
it now supports importing
contacts from Outlook Express, Palm and custom. You can also use it to
up/download wallpapers and ringtones.
There's really no reason to buy any software like that from futuredial
3) Yes

I have been trying to contact rpiwireless and they don't answer my e-mails.
Their website double charges the tax on my order when I try to make a Paypal payment.
I cancelled the order before submitting payment and e-mailed them about the problem. No response
from them.
Can anyone tell me if this a reputable dealer?
TIA

They are hard to get ahold of as there are a small operation but they are
legit and reputable.
Your best bet is to call them.

I've spoken to Bob before he's a good guy. I called the 888 number and it
forwarded me
through to his personal cell phone.

Which one? Their site is confusing, eg. two apparently identical
items with different prices, a cable that claims to be a usb<->serial
cable yet comes with a photo with no blob in the cable.

I tried asking them about these cables, but apparently they don't answer e-mails. :-(
