I posted the other night about being able to upgrade my phone now that
my contract is up, and was informed that i will be eligible. however, i
have a few more questions regarding how cingular will deal with someone,
like me, who is on the old nation plan (w/o any roaming charges). there
are a few scenarios i want to know about.
first, will i still be able to keep the old plan on a month to month
basis, or will they try to move me to one of the currently offered plan?
second, i assume that if a try to do the subsidized phone upgrade deal,
that will require extening the contract and moving to a new plan. am i
right on that?
third, if i get a different phone from some other source, (e-bay, i
suppose, although that scares the heck out of me), will they let me
switch to that phone without changing plans or extending the contract?
thanks for any responses.

They will try to get you to sign a new contract in order to get a new phone.
I'd suggest that you keep the old one a bit longer if at all possible.
Usually, they will suggest a GAIT phone as a replacement. There is a very
limited choice, and the GAIT phones do not have the features available in
the GSM phones.
You can insist on keeping the old nation plan, and you may have to keep your
old phone in order to do this in some areas.
You can always ask what model phones cingular will support if you decide to
get a new one.

Say what? The Sony Ericsson T62u is a very full-featured phone.

If you are on a GSM plan and get another phone there's nothing that
cingular has to do or would do. You'll simply put the SIM in the new
phone and that's it.

Just to be clear
In the Dallas market, you are not required to change your plan.
You can "upgrade" (read get a phone at a reduced price my extending your
contract), or purchase a new phone and have the ESN switched.
I think, the exception would be if you wanted to purchase a GSM phone.
I don't think that would not work on your old nation plan, you will probably
have to get on a GSM plan.
