Suppose I bought a phone, suppose a Treo 600 from a company that does
not affiliate itself with any one company.  How do I get the phone to
work on, say Cingular?
I don't understand the SIM card part of it or unlocking it.

Help please in understand how all this works.

If you have an UNLOCKED Treo 600, bring it to a Cingular store and
they'll take care of it.

The SIM card has your phone book and mobile phone number, among other
things.  You can put it into another phone and it'll be just like your
phone.  Unfortunately, if the phone is locked, that means that it'll
only work with a SIM from the carrier it's locked to.  In your case,
if it's locked to, say, T-Mobile, it won't work with a Cingular SIM.

Just take the SIM and install it in the Treo and it will work
*provided* it's not locked to a particular carrier.  If you unlock it
the phone will work.

The SIM contains all the pertinent information for your account
including your account.  Also has the phone book information if you've
stored your data on the SIM rather than on the phone.

As for unlocking it means that usually the carriers have the
manufacturer lock the phone so it will only accept the SIM of that
network and reject all other SIMs.  If you have the SIM lock
restriction removed any SIM from any network will work.
