What is involved in activating a new account when you buy the phone
from other than a Cingular store/outlet? I will be getting my new
phone next week, and would like to be prepared. I also want to
transfer my existing number. I was told that would kill my current
service with Verizon immediately.

Sounds like you did thru Tele Slaes when you get the phone you have to call
an 800 number, after that your Cingular Phone will work i.e. make
calls,while your Verizon phone will recieve calls that is only for a few
hours or mins.then your Cingular phone will be the only one that works then
you can call Verizon
