Before the Cingular/ATT merger, did Cingular have its own towers in
the New York City metro area? (NYC, Northern NJ, Long Island, a couple
counties upstate, etc), or did it roam on another TDMA/GSM carrier
(ATT)?

As far as I know, Cingular was an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator)
and was using T-Mobiles towers. I'm not sure the exact demographics of
the deal, but I would imagine it was the whole area. Now I would expect
roaming on Cingular/T-Mobile and the AT&T/Cingular networks.

It was Cingular Extended using T-Mobile's towers.
