Let me start this by saying that I'm NOT looking for free software. It's
just that I don't want to buy something unless I need to.
I am trying out an S56 on Cingular in the NYC area. I would like to use my
Ipaq 3870 to access the Internet via GPRS using the handset as a modem. I
asked for the 3MB Wireless Internet Express package when I signed up.
Now I've had little problem with this sort of thing on Voicestream and
Verizon (P7389/T68i/VX-1) and my Ipaq connected first time with a AT&T Nokia
6200 I'm trying out, using their excellent set-up directions. But...
naturally, I can't get this to work with the S56. Simply won't connect to
their network via IrDA or Bluetooth. So I try to use the e-mail client on
the S56 to get my POP mail via GPRS and that won't work either. After a year
and a day on the phone a Cingular Tech finds that my account wasn't
provisioned correctly (maybe no ISP.CINGULAR feature?) and now the on-board
e-mail client works. But I still can't get onto the Internet with the Ipaq.
I've scoured sites, know the various ISP.CINGULAR User Names and Passwords
(both DA and non-DA), use them both in the phone and on the PDA, and still
no connection at all.
My question is, then, is there some magic incantation in the Data Connect
software that makes this all work or should the generally available Cingular
WAP/GPRS Settings manual be sufficient to get online? If it's the former, or
if purchasing Data Connect gets me additional, proper provisioning, fine.
But I'm wondering if Data Connect is just to make things easy and the
connection SHOULD be doable on my own.
Thanks in advance for any info or pointers.

No.

Yes.

That's correct.
To connect over GPRS you need to have a proper GPRS profile set up in the
phone; a GSM modem configured in your computer; and a proper GSM dial string
that selects the correct GPRS profile. See my webpage below for tips.
