I've just ordered my first ever cellphone off the internet. I know this
sounds stupid, but do I get to at least have some leverage on what number my
new phone will be? Cause it seems that a random number has just been
assigned to me (under my designated area code of course.) What can I do?

nothing. Had you done it over the phone ++maybe++ you could have
expressed a preference about the nature of the number.

Call customer service and ask if you are in the trial period you still have
some leverage.
You could add a second line to your house and ask for a better number then
port that number to your cell phone.
Or do the same with another cell phone and cancel during the trial period.
Except the first sugestion all will cost money.

Typically Cingular will charge a $36 fee to change numbers once service
has been established. Since you are in a trial period, they may just go
ahead and waive the charge.
As far as the leverage you have, it based on whats available. They can
pull numbers from select cities and towns, but whatevers available is
what's available. Don't expect to be able to pick your entire number.

if you would have went to a store you could have selected at least 2 of the
numbers and picked from 5 listed..
we get the opportunity to choose from a list or try to find close numbers.
alot of times tho you wont get a choice anyway, i usually only search when
its a family plan and i am looking for numbers in sequence.
