My son has the AT&T Go Phone prepaid plan that is being discontinued in
our area. He pays $29.95 per month for 150 minutes with free nights and
weekends. We have not been able to locate an equivalent plan. Everything
comparable is at least $10 more. Unless we can find something
reasonable, he may be doing without a phone after July. Any suggestions
for providers? I've checked Alltel, Nextel, Sprint, Cingular, and
Suncom. I thought rates were supposed to drop with number portability.
Doesn't seem like they have.

Mergers have reduced competition and rates have gone up, as consumer
watchdog groups predicted.

Just wait. If Verizon can't buy MCI, it may well chase after Sprint,
for the Long Distance.

Cingular, following its acquisition of ATTWS, offers the GoPhone with what
appears to be the same rate structure.

Not even close. He pays $29.95 per month for 150 minutes with unlimited
nights and weekends.

If your credit is good you could set him up on a plan for $29.99 with
200/1000.What's wrong with that? Prepaid is only a good deal for seniors or
people who use the phone a very minimal amount each month.

Credit is perfect, but his ability to count minutes is flawed. When he
runs out of minutes, his phone shuts down for the month. If the
companies would let you put a limit on a regular account, I would not
mind him getting one. However, they make way too much money on kids
going over their prepaid minutes.

Does any of the major companies allow you to limit usage on a
non-prepaid plan?
