Ow god, I hate the students that flock into IU every year.
This year seems to be one of the worst I can remember.
The traffic jam yesterday was totally horrible.
And all the students that was in traffic had their cell phones
glued to their head.
So..
The cell system that normally can handle the traffic that
the attending students can throw at it, was total overwhelmed.
I needed to make a quick call, so I tried my old car phone.
It was 5pm
It took around five tries to get a live circuit.
Finished up on the 30 second call and hit the end button.
Later that day, I was getting ready to head home, so I called the
house to see if anyone needed anything from town on my way through.
Because I didn't plan on going back into Bloomington if I could help it.
It was 9pm, and it still took me 3 tries to get a live circuit.
Finished up on the two minute conversation and hit the end button.
As I went into the local kmart, I seen two people
setting in cars talking on their cell phone, and one more
met me as they was coming out of the store talking on their phone.
I went in and got what I needed, and heeded back out.
The two people that was setting in their cars talking where still there,
talking on the phone.
And another person had pulled up while I was inside, and they was standing
outside of their car talking on the phone.
They was gabbing about how their day was.
So when I got in my car, I switched the phone over to the verizon
side to see if they was overloaded the same way cingular was.
I dialed 611 and got the fast busy signal on multiple tries before I got
through.
I am beginning to understand what hit the NY cell system when the
lights went out.
People just start gabbing on their phones and won't shut up.
If it take multiple fast busy signals before you can get a live circuit,
Maybe that is an indication that the cell system is being over taxed,
And it might be a small indication that you should try to keep your
gab sessions short, in consideration of the people that might want
to use the phones for something besides talking about what is on TV.
(gets off of soap box)
Have a good day :-)

friday AM.

As I have stated before in other post.
I am using a 3W AMPS/TDMA mobile phone.
(yes they do exist.)
It also has a half rate capable codec.
(ie) It can run TDMA full rate or half rate.
On cingulars side, it runs native TDMA.
On verizon's side, it runs AMPS.
On verizon's side, they don't start shifting
people to amps unless all the CDMA capacity is used up.
So if I can't get an AMPS channel, then all the
CDMA capacity in the area is full.
The only thing I hate is when cingular sticks me on
a half rate connection.
The codec in that phone doesn't exactly shine in half rate mode.

I don't know about anyone else BUT I paid for my phone and the time. That
means I
have the right to use it ALL I want. If the system can't handle it then
they should add more equipment. I don't have to have a SPECIAL reason to be
on the phone. If I want to talk about TV then that's OK, I PAID for the time
IN ADVANCE!

It is your right to use it all you want, when you want........
But........
It is also my right to complain about you and other people doing so.
:-)
To me, it has more to do with courtesy than anything else.
I think courtesy is a major factor on controlling a person's phone usage.
Just because someone legally can, doesn't really make it right in my
opinion.
Just the same way that I don't use a cell phone while I'm driving.
If someone calls me while I'm going down the road, I tell them I'll call
back when it get stopped somewhere.
I don't believe my being able to use a phone while I'm driving is
worth the danger I cause other people on the road while I do so.
And I don't believe that my opinion of a TV show coming on at that time
justifies me tying up a channel someone else may need for more important
matters.
The same as my right to not give anyone a space to pull in from the side
while I'm in traffic.
I don't have to, but I will do it anyway.
Because other people will do the same for me when I need to pull out
on the highway during high traffic times.

Well I guess it's my right to tell you to STUFF IT................

I can't comment on Stinkular's service, since I absolutely flat-out
refuse to do any business whatsoever with SBC, especially now that I
live in an area where SBC is not the ILEC. However, maybe if you write
to whichever Executive Office handles that part of Indiana, you could
suggest taking steps to add capacity during the busy times.
I don't know if it'll do any good, but at worst you'll just waste a little
time.

Both of their systems is mature in Bloomington.
(as you have stated in your other post.)
And I am not going to complain to cingular,
nor would i complain to verizon if I was a verizon customer.
I can't fault them for running short on capacity in that situation.
It seem that everyone in Bloomington decided to pick up their phone
and start talking.
I couldn't turn around without seeing someone talking on a phone.
(more than normal that is.)
You normally see a moderate number of IU students with cell phones
stuck to their head, but.....................................
It looked like everyone bought their child a cell phone over break, then
all the children with cell phones decided to converge in one area. (IU)
There is no way the companies could have seen it coming in this area.
And I would be surprised if it happened again next year.
If it does happen again next year, or is worse, then the native carriers
here
will be hurting bad.
It is the first week of classes, and I hope it doesn't continue on like this
for the rest of the school season.
If it does, I'll have to find other ways to go besides going through
Bloomington.

If you're using Verizon without paying directly for the service, it
makes no sense to complain to them anyhow. What I'm curious about
is how you're getting onto Verizon... roaming through Cingular maybe?
Isn't that expensive?

I am not a student at IU, nor do I live there. I will, though, make sure
not
to use my car and the gas I bought for it in an unessential manner. It
will
ONLY be used from this point on for point A to point B transit between
work
and the grocery store. I will make every attempt possible not to use it
to
travel to Starbucks or the movies, as that would invite "gabbing" at the
expense of congested roadways. I am glad that someone such as yourself
has
never made a personal phone call to tell your wife you love her or your
friends that your team scored a touchdown. Oh my gosh, imagine if they
put
fun stuff on the internet! The horror that would cause! I will attempt
to
live as you so desire, a robot focused on only the bare necessities of
life,
so as not to offend you and cause you to lose an extra 4 seconds of your
most precious time as it is clearly more important than all other's. I
usually do not get involved in these juvenile arguments, but such a
moronic
unsubstantiated self-centered comment yearned for a foot to be put down.
I
pay, we all pay, for our cellular service and use it however frickin'
way we
want to.
(Pushes N9WOS off soap box)
Thank you and have a lovely self perpetuated day. :)

Did you go to Purdue? :)
The networks *DO* bear responsibility to provide service for
*ALL* of their customers. What does Cingular and Verizon do
during IU football games? Choke? Moving in day isn't the
only day of heavy usage.

When I have been unlucky enough to be caught in the traffic
going to and from a game, I haven't ever had a problem
getting a call through.
But....... the cell traffic was worse than it would have been
at any football game.
And I would say that there was far more people in Bloomington
than there ever would have been for a football game.
and it was a solid density of people across the entire area.
And earlier today, I talked to my uncle.
He said that the land line phone system was starting to
malfunction from circuit overloading that day.
The local phones would tell you that all circuits are busy and
when it did ring, it would ring once and then go dead.
Or you had crackling and popping on the phone then it
would die in mid conversation.
That explains why I got dead air once or so, instead of the fast busy
when I was trying to call the house.
As I said, it was almost like someone sent a subliminal message
to everyone to "talk on your phone and keep talking"
That is why I just said what I needed to at that time and
then terminated the conversation.
I didn't want to add to the problem.
