Emergency Only?

I have a couple of LG L1400 cell phones for my family plan.  Quite often I
get the message "Emergeny Only" on the display when I try to dial.  I've
exchanged phones and SIM cards, but still have the problem.  If I remove the
sim card and install it into a different brand but still cingular phone it
will work with that phone but the weird thing is that when I re-install it
into the L1400 it works fine.  The Cingular store where I bought the phones
said this is a problem with the LG phones, but they didn't say if it was
specific to the L1400 only.

Any ideas on what to do about this?  I really can't afford to pay full price
for a different brand replacement.

Thanks for any help on this matter.

I get this on my V-180 when I have a bad signal. It usually happens inside a
building.

I have a couple of LG 4050s and get the same problem.  Other than that they
work fine.  After calling CS about this problem, and waiting on hold while
the rep talks to their techs (?), she said it was 'fixed'.  Whatever that
means.

Where I see this mostly is in large metro areas.  Suspect it is something
akin to service at capacity, although they will not say so.  Rebooting the
phone or the number of bars makes no difference.  When traffic slows the
message is gone and access again works fine.

Emergency Only, aka SOS Only.

While searching for answers I found this on another forum.

"Your phone transitioned between cell coverage but the handoff did not occur
hence your phone was not recognized by the network."

People there say rebooting and leaving it off for a time (5 minutes) will
clear it, but I have tried this with limited success.

The book for my SE Z500a states that Emergency Calls Only means "you are
within range of a network, but you are not allowed to use it.  However, in
an emergency, some service providers allow you to call the internations
emergency number 112."
