Until very recently, cingular's website showed 12885 (warrensburg, ny)
as TDMA only phones. Now it is showing GAIT and GSM phones. While i
live downstate, i spend most of the summer up there. Was thinking
about getting the v60gi (which is listed where i live downstate but
not up there) because I travel to Europe a few times a year.
So the question is, since the world phones are 900/1800/1900, will it
work in 12885 where most of the phones are listed as 850/1900? When
they normally do a change-over from TDMA, is it 850 only or 850/1900?
Thanks!

Since Cingular has a license for 800 MHz cellular A-band, that part
stays the same while the modulation changes from TDMA to GSM. A GSM
world phone with the 900/1800/1900 MHz bands won't work for you in
Warrensburg on Cingular (or ATT or T-Mobile).
A world phone with 800(850)/1800/1900 MHz will do the job, with one
band for the rest of the world. Suitable models would be the Nokia 6200
and the Sony Ericsson T616, available in Warrensburg. Those two, and
the Sony Ericsson T316 are available in the NYC market.
Interesting how the web site calls the v60gi a world phone, but follows
up with "Single-Band: Operates on GSM 1900 MHz System". The details
page shows 900/1800/1900, but also repeats the quote!

My guess is that a 900/1800/1900 handset will not work in Warrensburg.
Most all of cingular's GSM outside of west coast and the Carolinas is
at 850. So, unless you get a GAIT phone that will work on 850/1900 or
just a regular 850/1900 phone for GSM and then get a Euro/Asian
900/1800 only phone for use when you go to Europe. At present I don't
believe cingular has any "quad band" 850/900/1800/1900 phones though
there are a couple models that are now available.
