Can a Nokia 5165 phone made for Cingular be "re-programmed" for use on an
AT&T network?

Thanks.

Are you looking to use it for a prepaid account?  I don't think ATT or
Cingular will let you activate any TDMA equipment any more.  That being
said if you are just trying to replace another TDMA phone with this one
you would need to get the ESN loaded into the system.  However since
the buyout it may already be loaded in the system.  Call customer care
and give them the ESN they will tell you for sure if it can be
activated.

Some Nokia's I've have were SOC locked, when programing the phone
*3001#12345# , NAM 1 , field 2 Home SOC didn't show up so you could not
change it. I unlocked my phone with a cable and software but if you can get
an OTA update this may work too. Not sure this is not a catch-22 the SOC has
to be correct before the over the air update. But yes you can reprogram
Cingular 5165 for AT&T, if it's locked then do not expect a lot of help from
AT&T or their resellers. My guess is you wish to use the phone with one of
the AT&T TDMA prepaid resellers.

Thanks for all the advice. Yes, I'd like to use Nokia 5165 on prepaid Beyond
Wireless.

According to Dave Mrkson, the cellphone guru (self appointed, but doing
a great job!)
http://www.cellguru.net/callplus_faq.htm
he recommends using only an ATT branded TDMA phone for CallPlus, an ATT
reseller.  The same applies to Beyond Wireless :
"I suggest using only an AT&T branded phone.  Several people have had
problems because the phones were locked to other carriers and the IRDB
was programmed to reject the Cingular Blue (former AT&T) network
(1/20/2004)"
Markson has a great prepay cellphone comparison chart, and Beyond
Wireless is tops for those who live in an area covered by BW:

I have a 5156 unlocked and many accessories...I would be willing to
sell......if that would help you out. It was originally for Sprint....but
like I said it is unlocked.
