I've done this in the past but it's been a while, so I'm wondering if
anyone has done it recently.
I'm a very low minutes user, currently on a $9.99/mo plan, and I'm not
on contract. I still have an old TDMA Startac :). Well, my phone is
wearing out, and I'd like to get a new one. My current thinking is to
sign a contract at $29.99/mo to get a new phone, and then in a few
months change to a lower plan.
I'm also a techno geek, and would love to get a RAZR phone. I'm
probably going to jump on one of those rebate deals.
Has anyone done this recently? Have any advice?
Thanks

Too late. The $29.99 was eliminated May 31. They now start at $39.99 (450
min - all plans are National with no local plans available (most areas,
check with a local store or customer care for your specific area).

Just upgrade your phone and tell them you wish to keep your same
current price plan. They will let you.
FYI, there is no longer a $29.99 price plan as of 6/1/05, and if you
ever leave your particular plan, you would not be able to go back.

I asked about that and they will only activate a phone under the same
plan on the same technology as the current plan, so I'd have to find a
new TDMA phone.

Oh well, I guess I'll have to hatch another scheme...
Thanks for the info.

I've heard many people say the RAZR is not a great phone. They marketed this
thing
very well. I *WANTED* one pretty badly. And I don't even remember when or
how I started wanting it. But then I read the people felt it was weird to
hold (to wide?)
and I held one at a kiosk and played with it a bit. That took the edge off
wanting one.
If you are a low minutes user - don't waste your money. Just get over this
desire.

That is your opinion only. Mine is EXACTLY the opposite. I kept Best Buy
open til 9:45 the evening of May 31 only because I love the Razor and I
wanted to activate an additional line of service but that was the last day
for the $29.99 plan. With the tremendous price drop on the Razor ($149 at
BB and you don't even have to wait on a rebate) it was too much for me to
pass up. Everyone has different preferences of course but to me the Razor
design is perfect. While the height & width are a little larger (resulting
in a larger, easier to read screen) the depth and weight are almost
nonexistent. My biggest fear is that one day I will throw my pants in the
washing machine and ruin it as usually can't even tell it is in my pocket.

And who might these people be? hahahaha
The RAZR is a great phone, read the reviews at phonescoop.com.

While considering purchase, the negatives I've read is that the address
book does not store street addresses and that the memory is small and not
expandable.

It is definitely not perfect. What you say right about the addressbook but
my biggest complaint with the addressbook is that you can only search by the
first letter in the name rather than anything more specific. If you have 20
people whose name starts with S and you are looking for Stuart you may be
scrolling for a long time. All that said, I still think that it is a
terrific phone (90% of that is based on the form factor though) and I'm glad
I bought mine. If size isn't an issue there is really precious little
difference between that & a V551.

Great phone but the phone book is annoying. If someone hacks up a
FLEX to fix that I may give it a try.
You sure can't beat the latest Amazon deal: Free.
