Bought my phone, do I have to tell Cingular?

I decided to just go and buy my own phone and not go through Cingular...
It's working fine now...  The only thing is that the person whom I bought
the phone from told me I had to call Cingular and give them a number on the
box (also inside the phone), some type of serial number...  Do I need to do
this if my phone is working fine or will it stop working in the future if I
don't call them?

Thanks,
Babs

Absolutely not.  I do this all the time.

cingular or any other operator does not need to know which handset you
are using.  If they really want to they can tell which handset you are
using from the handset's broadcasting the IMEI when you make calls,
but that's it.  You can switch handsets 20 times a day and it won't
make one wit of difference to cingular.

Technically, if you bought the Nokia 6340i or Sony Ericsson T62U (a GAIT
phone) and want to use the GAIT capabilities (TDMA & Analog), you would have
to call Cingular to give them the IMEI number.  If you don't call it in,
then you can only use the GSM signal.

If you bought a GSM phone, then no, you would not have to call in to
Cingular.

Well, they didn't say they were going to use a GAIT phone now did
they? :)

Ah, yes, I saw reference to a PDA and phone combo on a website...  I'll have
to check into it...  Are these GAIT phones worth it though?  I've had my
m515 for a few years now, will the PDA phone combo last as long do you
think?

GAIT phones are very basic

Only if you see the no service message on your phone and then maybe the GAIT
phone will work.

I have a bag of phones most of the time they all work, a few times none
work. The GAIT Cingular phone and the Verizon with amps backup work the best
off road.
