Cingular REFUSES to unlock cellphone - even after 3 years of service.
Have been overseas and was without cellphone service and would like to
get this unlocked before Christmas time trip again.

***** If there is a code will someone post it and give details on how
to get it done. ******

Also, next time I pay for a cellphone which phone can i get that is
unlocked. Doesn't have to be Cingular - would change for better
customer service.

Thanks for replys in advance.

Who at Cingular refuses.  Customer Service emails Technical Service, and 3
days to 5 weeks later, I always got a call back.

Or for $5 on Ebay will save you time.  There are many T28 on Ebay.  Or you
can consider a r520m.

"Who at cingular refuses?"

Subsequent to learning about LOCKING feature while overseas I called
cingular customer service and was given an address to physically
take/send my T28 to have it unlocked. Thereafter, having lost the
address I recalled customer service only to be told that "a request
will be made to tech and someone will call you back" - no one from
cingular called back. Later, again for a third time I called cingular
customer service to be told that "cingular no longer unlocks
cellphones". The individual names of the customer service persons are
not relevant and I do not care to make them an issue.

As far as paying someone else to unlock the T28 I would agree to it,
but only after I have exhausted reasonable attempts in having cingular
cooperate in this process. I will admit reluctance to handing over my
cellphone to some stranger to unlock it.

Yesterday, after researhing this issue I learned the following:
a series of keypunches brings up the service menu:  >*<<*<*
wherein you may find cellphone registration number, and
locked/unlocked status.

To be honest I have to say that it is very strange to have an
ambiquous code 'hiding' such important information instead of listing
it in 'settings'.

This then raises the question: what other features are 'hidden' that
as the purchaser of the cellphone I should have been made aware of?

Thanks in advance for replys.

That's a manufacturer issue, not a Cingular issue.

It is an issue for both, though, more of a manufacturer issue
(erriccson) and certainly an industry-wide issue. Since the T28w in
question was purchased from Cingular, and purportly LOCKED and limited
in use either by them or at their request, feature access and control
of the cellphone becomes their issue. However, any further posts, if
necessary, will be directed to ng other than .cingular.

Best ragards.

Not true -- Cingular will unlock for a good reason; e.g., an overseas trip.

I contacted their unlock department prior to my trip, and it took a
couple of weeks for them to respond (via email).  By that time I'd
become fed up and quit Cingular, went to T-Mobile.  Now, Cingular would
not provide an unlock code for the T28 to me, they would only agree to
pass the code directly to my "new" service provider, i.e. where I opened
a new GSM account.  I was also frustrated that Cingular customer service
/ tech support no longer responds to emails, and via customer service
phone calls it had become almost impossible to get true tech support
or tech information.  I ended up paying over 20 USD to get my T28
unlocked.  The T28 apparently requires a special cable and a code
generator (which takes some time, perhaps not a plain map).  Larry.
