My 2 year contract with Cingular expires at the end of June. I'd like to
stay with them, but need a new phone as the one I have now is junk. I'm on
the old $29.99 plan and after spending a lot of time on the phone with CS,
they won't let me upgrade my phone without upgrading my plan first. Of
course all the new plans are more expensive with minutes I'll never use.
So, is there a way I can get a decent phone from some where else to use
with my current calling plan? Current phone is a SE T62U with SIM card.
TIA

Ebay has about 200 of them listed right now. The T62U, that is. -Dave

Probably because the T62U is a piece of junk. My first SE phone. And it
didn't leave a good impression. Always had Nokia's before.
But, the T62U isn't the issue. Find a replacement phone to work with
Cingular is......

If you want to have the same band coverage as you have with the T62U you
only have one choice. The Nokia 6340i of which there are many of on Ebay. If
you want just the GSM band coverage, you have many choices on Ebay.

There is no gsm band. It is my understanding that any cingular or
unlocked dual band gsm phone will work.

Ask for a manager and if that doesn't work, either walk or just buy the
phone you want from Cingular paying the retail price that they charge. I'm
also on the $29.99 Nationwide GSM plan and I don't intend to pay for even
MORE minutes that I don't even use now.
Use http://www.phonescoop.com to find phones that will work on Cingular.
Namely they work on the 850/1900 GSM bands, unless you need to stay on the
GAIT phone that also does TDMA, which is eventually going away. If you live
in a large metro area you are probably going to find that GSM works just
fine (better than it did 2 years ago). If you decide on a phone you like
and can find it for a reasonable price online then I'd do that. Your
current GAIT phone probably already has a SIM card and you can put that into
any new 850/1900 GSM phone that you like. An unbranded phone may need
special configuration to work on all of Cingular's features, but you can
normally find a Cingular branded phone without a contract for much less than
what Cingular wants for one without a contract.
Here's my way of thinking: I don't even use the minutes that I currently
have and if I let Cingular force the $39.99 plan on me, I'm paying another
$120/year for something I don't need. I'd rather pay full price for the
phone I want and not be tied to Cingular and not pay for something I don't
need. If I let Cingular force the $120/year punishment on me, are they
REALLY giving me a good price on the phone?
I still think you should be able to keep your old plan, but they can
probably sell a subsidized phone with any strings attached that they choose.
You might also check out http://www.howardforums.com - that site is for cell
phone nuts and you may be able to get more info from the Cingular forum
there.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info. I'm just looking for a GSM phone to use with my
current plan. I'm in the Tampa area and I believe it is GSM.
