Novice question about V551

We just converted from AT&T to the Cingular Family Talk Plan (1000 minutes),
which meant we had to get all new phones.  My wife and I got the free
Samsung 427m, and we bought Motorola V551 phones for our son and daughter,
since they both wanted camera phones.   We also signed up for the Media
Basic package on both kids' phones.

Question about the V551:  The kids have started taking pictures with the
phone.  How do they transfer the pictures to their PCs?  My son has a laptop
with a wireless connection (he lives at college and has an ethernet high
speed connection in his dorm), and my daughter has a regular Windows XP
desktop with a modem but no wireless.  Is there some kind of device with USB
cabling that can be connected to the phone?  And since my son has a wireless
laptop, can the bluetooth capability give him some kind of wireless way to
get the pictures to his laptop?  Where can we get the software/hardware
needed for this, and how much does it cost?

Also, if they just want to email the pictures to themselves, how do you
email pictures on the V551?  My son says he has tried a couple of times, but
the network wasn't available.  Cingular telephone support hasn't been too
helpful.

We're all novices in this area, since we converted from clunky old AT&T
Nokia phones.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

email pictures to any email account from the phone.

There are two other options: Bluetooth dongle(additional purchase) can
transfer the pictures OR Motorola Mobile Phone tools software  ($30)
that comes with a USB cable.

for the network error, visit the store where you bought, a setting in
the phone is wrong or in Cingular computers.

Your sons computer being wireless 'Centrino' is for wireless
networking, it is not Bluetooth, most likely it is wifi (802.11g).
WIFI is for wireless internet and sending files to other computers on
a network.

(phone manual page 13) select the picture, press the middle button to
get the option "send as" email or multimedia message.  Select
messages, select create message, then push 'multifunction or menu
button.  Next goto Email Msg Setup.  Fill in the appropriate fields.
login and password of POP email account must be put into the phone.

If you have Bluetooth capability on your PC, you can do file transfers.

The question was...how do I specifically do it?  If I buy the bluetooth
dongle, how does the computer know where on the phone the pictures are
stored?  Is there additional software that would be needed for the PC?
Would I get some kind of directory listing on the PC?

You either need a USB cable or a Bluetooth (BT) dongle.  Dongle just
refers to the form factor of the adapter.  Bluetooth, IMO is much
easier.  The wireless notebook your son has is not the same type of
wireless.  The two won't share without a BT adapter.

I purchased a Blue-Gene BT-303U USB1.1 Bluetooth USB Adaptor from
NewEgg.com.  Currently they are running $20 w/$3.99 shipping.
http://tinyurl.com/9xdff  Its the only one I've had experience with.
You can spend much more and you can find them for less.  All I know is
this one works with the V551.

Installation was easy following the instructions.  If your son or
daughter has upgraded to XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and have problems, I
suggest running the program from the following link.

http://www.bvrp.com/customers/motorola/BTDriverFix.zip

If the machine has more than one USB port, you may need to re-run this
fix for each port you plug into.  But once you fix it, it should stay
fixed.  That's how it worked for me and mine.

Once the BT hardware and drivers are installed you need to pair the PC
and the phone.

On the V551 press the top middle button. Select
SETTINGS >> CONNECTION >> BLUETOOTH LINK >> SETUP
If you want to change the name of the phone as it appears to other
devices, this is where you do that.  By default it will be "Motorola
Phone".  Leave the phone on this menu for the moment.

On the computer, with the BT dongle plugged in, click on My Bluetooth
Places.  It may be on the desktop but is also available from My
Computer.  The logo is a vertical blue oval with a funky B that looks
something like this
\|>
/|>

Select ADD A BLUETOOTH DEVICE  from bluetooth tasks section on the
left.  A wizard should open.  Now tell the phone to be "Discoverable".
From the phones bluetooth setup menu, select FIND ME.  You now have 60
seconds to run the Add a Bluetooth Device wizard.  Click the NEXT
button in the wizard.  It will search and find the phone.  When it
does, select the phone it found and click NEXT.

Enter a PIN code.  It can be anything you want. 1234 will work.  Click
INITIATE PAIRING.

On the phone the screen should now be asking if you want to bond with
the computer.  Choose yes.  Enter the pin you chose.

You will see some successful bla bla bla and then Blue Tooth Service
Selection.  By default, everything is checked.  Make sure OBEX File
Transfer is checked. Click FINISHED.

Back to My Bluetooth Places.  Your phone should now show in that
window.  Click on it to open (or double click depending how your PC is
set up).  Open OBEX File Transfer on (your phone's name here)

Now all you need is basic drag and drop window skills.  There will be
3 folders.  Audio, these are ringtones.  MP3s and MIDIs work.  Video,
these are the videos taken with the phone.  Apple's Quicktime will
play them and is available for free from
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
And finally Picture, this is where the pictures you were after the
whole time.

Hope this helps you and maybe someone else who was wondering the same
thing.  Good Luck

They usually never are. As a new customer you have at least 2
years to enjoy this fact. Have fun and good luck.
