I bought a new "in package" 6340i and have owned for over 4months.
Although the phone "overall" works great, it will shut down all by
it's self. The conditions for shut down don't seem to make a
difference, either carrying it, or sitting on the table over night.
The battery shows a full charge, the signal is good and the over
operations is sound. This is the only problem that I've found that
really effects anything. When your carrying a phone around and
discover that the thing has shut off for the past few hours.....that
really sucks. I've contacted Nokia and Cingular, but no reply as of
yet. Can anyone help?

My wife's phone was doing this. We took it into our local Cingular store
where the tech informed us that it had "issues" and needed to go back to the
factory. He gave my wife a loaner phone and told her it would take 2-3 weeks
to get her 6340i back.

I have had this happen as well and don't know the cause of this problem.
Sometimes it cycles and powers up after about a minute and sometimes it
doesn't.

You need to get the software updated.

Get the store to replace the battery. I had the same problem after
about the same amount of time and that fixed it.

Yes, alot of times it's the battery contacts on both the phone and battery.
The contacts get oxidized which causes bad connection and voila your phone
shuts down. But this may also be possible because of a faulty battery as
well. Not all techs know about this problem or know how to troubleshoot so
you'll get mixed responses.
This may sound corny but it has worked for me many times. Take a eraser
(like for pencils) and use it to rub firmly on all the metal contacts on the
phone and battery. Make sure you rub it good and see if it helps.

Two of our three 6340i phones started the shutdown bit. Cingular replaced
both with refurbished units. So far that solved the shutdown problem.
