anyone else have problems with reception/dropping calls/not being able to be
heard frequently?  Service in Mobile, AL...wife has V180 with no
problems...Im on my fourth 220...factory refurbs.....maybe make a better
paperweight?  Am I alone?

That's pretty much my opinion as well. I sit my 220 next to my wife's phone
and while she has 4 or 5 bars mine will fluctuate between 0-3 bars. I just
got a warranty replacement phone which is a little better than the original.
I'll be replacing mine as soon as I get a few extra dollars.

Don't get the V551, that sucks too.  On an aside though, the algorithm used
for
number of bars displayed not only varies from phone to phone, but from
firmware to firmware version.  The only real way to compare is if you can
put the phone into service mode and look at the signal level in dB you're
receiving from the tower (or of course use the phones and see how well
they work).

The V551 actually is one of the better phones in terms of RF.

Essentially correct.

Ditto.  I was really excited to try the 220.  Big disappointment.  Signal
strenght was very weak.  Camera was grainy, boot up time was very long,
keyboard was not very responsive.  Cingular store let me borrow one for a
few hours.  Got the Nokia 6230 instead and have been very pleased with it.

I just switched from ATT to Cingular (they just upgraded the towers in our
area).  I'm extremely disappointed in the ring tone volume.  Have to be
standing right by the phone to hear it.  My old Motorola phone had lots of
ring tones included (25 - I counted them).  I had no idea when I got the 220
that there would be two actual ring tones & a bunch of beeps!

Any possibility I can convince Cingular I can't hear the ringer and get them
to exchange it?  What phone would you recommend for people whose hearing
isn't the best in the world if they would trade?

Warranty will replace the phone with another v220, so if that type o
phone just isn't loud enough (ie no defect), that won't help.  Yo
would have to really push to get a different type of phone, and wil
probably not be successful.  Worth a try if you have the patience, bu
they are not at all required to do this type of exchange.

If you don't mind spending a couple bucks, why not download a rington
& see if it is louder.  Maybe talk to cust serv, explain the problem
and see if they will credit you the ringtone price (or do it & disput
the charge @ www.cingular.com/db, reason = non-receipt).  Once again
you may have to call a few times, so have your patience close by lol

I did download one ring tone & it wasn't any louder.  Just irks me how many
different ring tones there was on my old Motorola, and practically none on
this one.

Yeah, I know, it's gonna take patience!

Thanks,
Donna

Since you "just switched" you can return the phone without penalty and get
something different.  I personally use and recommend the V551, which has a
quite loud ring and a reasonable selection of tones.

Thank you, John.  You're right.  I called Cingular and they will be sending
me the V551.  Should have it by the end of the week.  More money than I
really wanted to spend, but as the old saying goes - you get what you pay
for.

Newsgroups are wonderful!  I've gotten so much useful info from newsgroups.
Glad I found this one.
