Motorola T720 (GSM) on Cingular

Greetings,

Recently I have been in the market for a simple, non-camera folding cell
phone as a replacement for my old Motorola V60.  I am with Cingular and will
be switching to GSM (my V60 was TDMA).  Cameras, web browsing, text
messaging, etc. don't really interest me on a cell phone, I just want one
that makes good quality calls and has the basic bells and whistles that
someone my age can still deal with (phone book and the like, which all
phones have these days).  I'm on a tight budget and don't want to commit to
another contract with Cingular just for a free phone - I've been with them
for a thousand years and enjoy the freedom of not having a contract.

I have the opportunity to purchase a brand-new, never used Motorola T720
still in the box for $60.00 (which is the going price, even on eBay if you
include shipping) but don't know much about this phone except what I have
managed to find on the internet.  It seems most of the reviews have been for
the CDMA version of the T720 on the Verizon network, and most of those have
been pretty bad - about 80%.

Normally I wouldn't consider this phone at this  point, but  I have also
found a few reviews (VERY few) for this phone on the Cingular GSM network
and they appear pretty positive.

I would like any sincere opinions about this phone on the Cingular GSM
network from anyone who has a moment to spare and is willing to post a
reply.  Any sage words of wisdom would be appreciated.

Thanks for your time - Jonathan

My wife has one and is happy, but she isn't a very heavy user either.
I recently replaced the original battery because it wasn't holding up as
long as it used to.  The little "antenna" thingy disappeared and the
replacement I ordered on the web (apparently the only place you can get
them) sticks out even more.  I think of it as a barb designed to prevent
easy removal from a pocket, but I guess that's less of a problem with
a purse.

Purchased 1 off eBay a while back (GSM) and it's a favorite phone.  Fits my
hand very well and has as reception as good as my v551.  That said, my v3
Razr has by far the best reception of any phone I've ever used.

I replaced the T720 antenna with a short stubby one and have not noticed any
decrease in reception.  For its price I think it's a very good phone.

We've had two of them for almost two years.  Battery life is good, reception
is good, sound quality (both ways) is good.  However, BOTH of them started
dropping calls when they were about 18 months old.  Calls would drop
anywhere from 5-15 minutes into a conversation, most of the time with FULL
signal strength showing.  (so it's not a reception problem)  This happened
regardless of what tower we were connected to.  (so it's not a local tower
problem)  Thinking it might be a battery problem, both batteries were
replaced with brand new Motorola brand batteries.  This did not make a
difference.  They both look brand new, haven't been abused or dropped or
anything.  They BOTH drop calls anywhere from 5-15 minutes into a
conversation.  We finally solved the problem by swapping the SIM of one of
them into a Nokia 3595.  The Nokia 3595 with the same SIM does not drop
calls in the same areas that we were using the T720s in (and the T720s DO
drop calls).  Subsequently, we've both upgraded to Nokia phones, from the
Motorola T720.  Yes, I consider it an upgrade.  The T720 is not a bad phone,
but seems to have a relatively short life expectancy.  That is, the life
expectancy of the *handset* (not the battery) seems to be about 18 months.
But at $60?  Still sounds like a decent deal.  -Dave

Older phone, came out in 2002 in Europe, then 2003 in USA.
Dual band so you can't go overseas with it.
Be sure it
1. Has US bands 850/1900mhz (stay away from 900/1800 model)
2. If locked, is locked to Cingular (not AT&T or Tmobile etc).  Unlocked
even better.

The GSM version is very superior to the cdma version, no comparison.

If you want to just make calls and that's all, it's good.

Many thanks to all who took the time to reply.  Yes, I did purchase the
phone, but now I have a follow-up question that I've posted under another
thread.

Thanks again, and I very much appreciate your input.

Cheers - Jonathan
