Unlocking means the phone can be used on any GSM provider. Unbranding
the firmware just means that they replace the Cingular customized firmware
with the firmware you'd get if you bought the phone directly from Nokia.
Cingular sometimes does nasty stuff like disable MP3 based ringtones
for example, and add their logo to boot up. Dunno if they disabled
MP3 ringtones on the 6682, but they did on the 6620 (but not
on the 6230b for some reason).

Just to answer your question, MP3s can be used as ringtones in the 6682
with Cingular's custom firmware. According to your explanation, then
uncostomizing would be the same as unlocking....If you were to buy the
unbranded version which used to ship directly from Nokia, then it has to
be unlocked because it can be used with any GSM provider.
But this can't be all, because www.iunlock.com specifically states that
they can uncostomize the phone...but not unlock.

No, it doesn't work that way. Changing the firmware does not unlock
the phone from Cingular. It just gets rid of the Cingular branded firmware.
Good to know that you can use MP3 ringtones at least. I'm having
my 6620 flashed by iunlock (once it comes back from Nokia repair -
though I requested as part of the repair that Nokia flash it to unbranded,
but I doubt they'll do that).
