If it's under warranty, the safest route is to call Motorola service (or
enter a service request on their web site). Tell them that you have poor
battery life and you want the April 15 firmware release that was
specifically designed to correct that problem. If your phone was sold
unlocked, be aware that this procedure will result in your phone having a
SIM subsidy lock applied.
If it's out of warranty, you're impatient, and/or wish to take a small
chance, get a data cable and flash it yourself. There are numerous places
on the net where you can download the firmware and find instructions on
how to use it.

OK. Thanks MIke. My phone is unlocked, so guess I should try the
flash it yourself route. I have done this with lots of other
computer/radio equipment, so shouldn't be a problem.

That does not guarantee your phone will stay unlocked. Applying
carrier-branded firmware usually applies a subsidy lock as well.
You can always pursue unlocking afterwards though, either through the
carrier or a third-party unlocking service.

I just joined this newsgroup and read this interesting message thread.
I have been complaining to Cingular for about a year now on poor battery
life on the Motorola V551 phone and they told me that its because of how
I use the phone. Cingular told me that I talked too much, but when they
reviewed my monthly call times, they had no clue. I have been daily
charging the battery in the Motorola V551 phones (I have two of these
phones).
I will be informing my local Cingular store about this issue as it seems
to occur with MANY Cingular customers.
How does one get the firmware update?
Thank you.
