Have not checked in recent days but the Razr online at best Buy is
$69.99

Does she like her contract?
If so, buy an unlocked RAZR and stick the ATT SIM card in, and go about
her business.

I agree. Thats what I did and have no complaints.

Here's what I did (and my wife still had many months left on her
contract). Call them and during the automated attendent select
that you want to disconnect your service. You should then be
sent to their customer retention group. Tell them you're going
to switch to T-Mobile because you can get a free RAZR and
that Cingular is giving you no incentive to stay. You should be
able to get them to give you a $200 credit to your account to
offset the price of the RAZR. Granted it's not the same as a
free RAZR but eventually it will be since you won't have to pay
a cell phone bill for a couple of months. If you're REALLY
persistant, they can give you a lot more than that. I basically
got a 6230 and a RAZR, paid $240 for them and they gave me
an almost $400 credit (they paid off my balance due on the ATT
side and put the rest on the Cingular side so as not to attract
attention). They are allowed to give you one month credit for
any plan you choose (so at their suggestion, I picked the $200/mo
plan, then switched to a $70/mo plan a week later). After all that,
they tried to charge me a prorated amount for the time I had
the $200/mo plan but I got a supervisor to credit that back.

Only do this if you really want to quit cingular.. heh
this one lady came into my store and was like i can get the phone for free
from tmobile and we were charging like 150 for it.
so she calls up and tries to do this right in front of me on the phone in my
store.
after about 2 times of saying well i can get this phone for free from
tmobile the guy must have said go ahead and just right then and there
canceled her account. she was like, but. but. but. but. and just hung up..
she was like nevermind guess i need to go to tmobile anyway.
be careful.

As long as you get the customer retention group and are
polite and calm, it's incredibly unlikely this would happen.
Their job is to KEEP you as a customer. If you get a
regular CSR, well then all bets are out the window. Ask
the CSR 'are you with the customer retention group' as
the ATT side calls it. I believe the orange side may call
it the 'office of the president'.

They are actually called "Save Teams"

I think the retention thing comes from credit card companies. Either wa
it didn't work. They said they could not offer anything on that phone i
the way of discounts or even credits. Oh well. If she wants it we'l
just have to buy it

This is VERY YMMV IMO. Good luck though.

Of course it is, but if you don't get an answer you like the
first time, call back. I had to talk to quite a few people
before I got what I was looking for. The guy I share an
office with was like WTF, you're always on the phone
with these people, but in the end we got what we wanted
and saved several hundred $$$. BTW, ATT absolutely
has a 'customer retention group', they referred to themselves
as that. I was reading in dslreports.com about similar
experiences and that's where I got the 'office of
the president' name from. BTW, similar things have
worked with Verizon DSL and DirecTV going
through their version of 'customer retention'.
