Found this while checking out some information. Is this new? Is it
enforced? Anyone have any ideas? Just wondered as I have heard that a
lot of people use the ?? 1X ?? to get their email and newsgroups with
only a charge by the minutes used. Any comments?

I'll answer the OP as John is ANAL about what gets posted on this group.
John, the OP asked a VALID question.
To the OP.
1X is a transmission protocol that provides for better data TX/RX.
It also allows for more voice calls per cell.
