I've been thinking of dumping the land line and using the cell exclusively.
I have only an occasional need for my fax machine, so this isn't a big deal,
but is there a way to send and recieve faxes using cell service?

You want to connect a fax machine to your cell phone?
I forget what that's called. There is a station that you plug a cell phone
into, and all of your house phones are connected to the cellular link.
Maybe a fax would work on one of those.
On the other hand, if your PC is connected to the internet in some other
way, you can get free inbound faxes via efax.com.
Outbound, you might need a scanner, and fax1.com for 12 cents per page.

Thanks for the advice.

I don't think any of those devices (vox2, cellsocket, dock-n-talk)
support real modems such as in a fax machine--data transmission isn't
compatible with the compression digital phones use (it CAN be done with
more expensive equipment just not any of those--see Telular.com for some
models that can do that).

That would be my suggestion also. Others: ureach.com, accessline.com

out there. Thanks

I'm wondering what my v710 is telling me on the Phone Status / Other
Information menu when it says Fax Ready = Yes.
(This might be a Verizon question, but the answer looked generic, so...)

If John McCain gets the 2008 Republican Presidential nomination,
my vote for President will be a write-in for Jiang Zemin.

My Cingular-Motorola V551 with Mobile Phone Tools _says_ it is dialing a
fax, it just never succeeds, and Cingular Customer Service says it won't,
that they don't support that feature any more.
John Navas says that you can add CSD for dialing out with your modem, but
that's $3.99 per month.

Cingular does not offer this service any longer. Cingular doesn't even
offer CSD anymore.
As another poster mentioned, the online fax services are the way to go. If
you only send, fax1.com is the way to go as the other poster mentioned. To
send and receive, its going to cost a little more, but still less than a
land line.
If your internet is through your land line (i.e. dsl), then you can replace
that with MediaNet unlimited for $20 and a phone that supports edge, you
will be set. It averages about twice the speed of dial up, so not bad for
regular browsing or sending faxes.
